Thurs 23 February - Daring activities

"How very sad that a silly stunt led a young man to his death in Cardiff Bay area.

"Unfortunately there seems to be a streak of derring do in some people that cannot be abated. Friends and associates will often attempt to pull them back from the edge of whatever actionn they propose to take, alarmingly, with little success in some cases, such as the one just mentioned.

"On the other hand we have to have certain of these chance takers in the interests of progress, without those who are prepared to takes risks, be they physical or mental, in life we would get no progress.

"Typically the Bungee jumper represents this in us lesser mortals, in that they take a risk, but with a safety factor built in. In reality they are taking nothing in the way of risk, but are giving themselves the impression they are.

"Those that truly do take risks, are those that do the same thing, but without the bungee to stop them hitting the deck.

"The worst aspect of the young man's death was the fact he had been 'partying' with all that implies. Unfortunately again, this is the one thing that seperates the true risk taker from the chancer - the chancer does it after imbibing quantities of booze or narcotics.

"Effectively it is the stuff taken in that is taking the chance, or else for gratuitous praise and admiration of a like minded but less chance taking so called friends, whereas the risk taker does it all stone cold sober, without the aid of artificial stimulation, the risk itself being all that is needed to give him his kicks.

"As I said before, we need risk takers for our future progress and survival, and it is doubtful that all the health and safety rules and regulations in this country will ever stop them doing risky things.

"If that regime does succeed in curtailing the actions of such people, we may as well go to sleep and not wake up.

"The chancers on the other hand are those that the health and safety people are meant to target in their sweep up of dangerous situations.

"The truth then is that everyone gets the same treatment, and those that we desperately need to keep taking risks, are basically bludgeoned into not doing so. Much to our regret I am afraid."
