Weird Nation

Eluned from Rhoose

I was very close to my grandmother, and in the last couple of years before she died tried to spend as much time with her as I could.

I was the only member of the family at her side when she passed away in hospital - the others live so far away that they didn't get to the hospital in time and missed her.

About 18 months after she died I found out I was pregnant and was delighted.

Having a family was something that my nan and I had talked about a lot and she'd given me lots of advice; my only regret was that she wouldn't be there to meet the baby when it arrived.

One night, about 4 months into the pregnancy, I found myself suddenly wide awake.

I don't think I'd heard a noise, but I sat bolt upright and looked towards the bedroom doorway.

I saw my grandmother standing on the landing looking at my husband and I.

She didn't seem to move or speak, she was just there, and then just as suddenly she was gone.

I wasn't scared but I was shocked, and I went to shake my husband to wake him up, but he was already awake.

He said that he had heard what sounded like lots of birds singing like they were in distress and it had woken him up.

A second later he had felt me sit up and wondered what was wrong.

Neither of us had been frightened, but we both had woken up with a strong sense that something was out of place.
