Weird Nation

Robert, formerly from Aberdare

Someone mentioned the Town Church Primary School in Aberdare as being scary.

In my younger days this was the Mardy House secondary school and there are quite a few ghost stories associated with the former Mardy House (which I'm told has now been demolished).

When I was a young man there was an Organ situated in a corridor in the main house and one of the curates from St Elvans used to go there to practise on it.

One day as he was playing it he felt a hand on his shoulder but when he looked sideways at his shoulder there was nothing there.

He then heard an odd-sounding voice saying "Why don't you turn around? Are you afraid to look at me?"

The Curate stood up and without turning around walked out of the building. He never went back to play that organ again.

There were also stories of a ghostly presence in the archway that connected the main house to the former stables and outbuildings.

It was supposed to be a young boy (either a stable lad or a kitchen boy) who hanged himself in that area after being ill-treated by his master.

I've also heard rumours of a female ghost but never knew the full details about her.

I never saw anything there myself, but I have to admit that I never liked coming home up the Mardy trip at night, and if I ever had be inside the grounds after dark I used to run like hell through that archway to get away from there as fast as I possibly could.
