Back in 1974, I was a teenager, living at home with my parents and my dad was the Chief Estates Officer for Cwmbran Development Corporation.
He had a problem with some tenants living in a new, terraced house on one of the towns estates. They claimed they had a poltergeist!
Not believing this for a minute, my very cynical dad decided to spend two nights at the house, along with his senior architect, the head of the buildings department and another surveyor.
They were amazed by what they found. They all witnessed the main walls of the house vibrating, the bannisters shaking and holes appearing in the wall of the little girls bedroom, punched inwards, as if something was trying to break into her room from the cavity in the wall.
In fact, everything revolved around this nine-year-old girl, Claire, who had recently attended the funeral of a close school friend. But she remained calm throughout it all, although her parents were in a terrible state and all the "experts" were pretty scared too.
All the banging and vibrating stopped when an adult entered her bedroom, which was always icy cold, and started again as soon as they left.
A priest was brought in to exorcise the house. He said it was a friendly spirit, but Claire's parents didnt agree - it had a funny way of being friendly in their view!
My dad and his colleagues were convinced. Whatever was going on here, it was beyond their understanding. The family were immediately rehoused and had no further problems.
Nothing more was said about this incident, which baffled a group of professional, disbelieving men who thought they knew all there is to know about problems with buildings!
