I was walking my a few fields away from my house at night when my dog started looking at a black figure about 50 yards in front of where I was stood. The black figure was the size of a large dog started moving. I tried to get my mobile phone out so I could use the light to see what it was. Just as I turned on my torch my dog pulled me down the field and started running down the field. Then I lost sight of it. The figure was pitch black and was about the same size as my dog which is a large rottweiler. Could this be a big cat?

I'm a sheep farmer and have just been round the stock. I found one ewe killed in the night, the skin had been totally turned inside out (in one piece) and every bit of meat had been eaten, except the head which was in tact. The sheep had been eaten by one animal as it had not been dragged around and there was a pool of blood, showing that the ewe had been killed and hadn't died and was then eaten. I suspect a large cat of some sort. Has anyone else seen anything like or have any ideas?

To S Kirby, I keep horses near Hafod farm in Goytre and we have seen a big black cat whilst out riding a few times. Also, we sometimes find the horses sweating - as if they have been running fast around the fields. We have been wondering if it's anything to do with the black cat.

I was up Tyn y Bedw mountain today (4/5/08) with my friend Liam and we found a spine. We assumed this was a dead sheep buried underground, but then we found a collar bone about 5 metres away and the skull around 20 metres away. We brought back the skull and after carefully washing and examination we found that there were four puncture wounds and the left eye socket had been broken. If this was a fox wouldn't the bones be closer? Plus there was no trace of other bones. I believe that the sheep was mauled by a big cat.

I have never seen a big cat, mind you I dont live in Wales. I'm fascinated with them and have read about all of the sightings. I think I would be terrified if I met one in real life, but I would love to hear of any more sightings and also agree that these big cats should not be bothered and just left alone. They have adapted to the habitat and like one of the statements says; wealthy people years ago used to keep them as pets until the law came into play.
Some people gave them to zoos but some people released them into the wild to fend for themselves. Obviously they have done quite well surving in our climate. We shouldn't get rid of them, they deserve to be here as much as we do!! They didn't ask to be put into the wild, they don't deserve to be hunted down, we should find out more about them and respect them.

its was early in the morning, about 2.30 to 3.00am. for some reason I looked out of my bedroom window and happened to see what appeared to be a rather big cat following a rather scared hedgehog. I did some research on the internet and thought the cat i saw was most like the Lynx cat.

There are claw marks on a tree in the Llantrisant Forest. The span of the marks are that of a man's hand and they are about three feet off the floor.

On 5 March 2008 at around 7.15pm I was about to walk my dog into a field which lies between the edge of Caldicot Industrial Estate and the Brooklands Motel. I go there most evenings with my dog as it is a dis-used field with overgrown brambles & trees around the edge and lots of rabbits. As I was about to go there, the Industrial Estate security guard asked where I was going. He was concerned as he had literally seen an enormous black cat by the field and was worried for our safety. He noted the sighting in his record book. He had parked up by the field on the Industrial Estate site. He heard rustling and noises from the bushes. Got out with his torch. Saw the huge cat. Said its body was bigger than he was and he was 5'9". He estimated it to be a good 15' total length, head to tail. He said it was much bigger, longer and taller than my dog, that my dog would look like a puppy next to it. I have an enormous dog, much bigger than a labrador or alsation. The security guard was obviously a bit shaken. The big cat did not back off but apparently carried on walking. The security guard backed off and back into his vehicle. I did start to make my way towards the field which was about 1 minutes' walk from where the Security Guard stopped me. But I got scared and turned back home. Rather concerned, as I walk my dog for 45-60 minutes all around that area and in that particular field every evening! Don't know whether I should stop doing so now or what.

I was on my way to Birmingham on 23/06/07 at around 9am in the morning with my girlfriend. We were driving along the M4, just after Pencoed in Bridgend, when I looked up at the footbridge just a few hundred metres in front of us. First of all I thought I could see a small cow or some type of cattle running across the bridge. But as I kept looking closely as it continued across the bridge and we got closer, I couldn't beleive what I was seeing. It was a large Dark cat. I believe it must have been a puma, possibly a panther as its shape and size were too big for a lynx. I turned to my girlfriend she thought it was a cow, but only glanced at first as she was driving and concentrating on the road ahead. I have always believed that there are many wild big cats roaming the countryside of Britain. But I am now convinced, as it was definitely a big cat of some kind. I know there are a lot of sceptics out there, but I felt a great warm feeling overcome me that there are some strange things out there. But you have to see it to believe it.

With regards to the comment by K Edwards of Merthyr I have seen a few footprints matching that of a big cat on Morlais Castle golf course whilst doing some pest control in the area, so I took a few pics and sent them to a expert who is currently looking at them.

A couple of years ago my wife and I were out in the car late one night around midnight. We were driving through the Gilwern to Crickhowell road through the woods when I noticed a dead sheep on the side of the road. I did think that it was very unusual to see a sheep out this way, when we noticed that the sheep was being eaten by a very large animal. This had a long thick tail and was light coloured - a lioness, I think. As we approached, the animal lept up and over a six foot wall with no effort. I stopped and went to have a look and I could hear the animal down in the woods. We drove up to Brecon and on the return journey found the animal eating the dead sheep again. This time I noticed that the innards were licked clean of blood. To see it twice was good and my wife still doesn't accept what we witnessed that night.

I was holidaying in Pontypridd and we decided to have a camp out in a nearby field. At about 2am we heard some rustling so we sat up and I took a look outside. With my torch on full beam I saw two glowing eyes in the bush. I stared back at them and as it edged closer I realised that it was a big black cat, too big to be a housecat and it had a really long black tail. It was a good 4-5 foot long. On the way home later that day about midday I saw a dead sheep in a neighbouring field. So I got out to have a look and I noticed it had paw marks and puncture wounds to its neck, and there was a good few chunks missing from the sheep's torso. Is it just a coincidence?

When I was about 14, I used to walk to Margam Park with my friends and we would go to the Abbey at the top of the hill. As kids do, we had a game of hide 'n seek. After about an hour of running around I sat against a tree for a rest. About 5 meters to my left, I could hear movement in the thick bushes and thought it was one of my mates. As I crept up to scare him, I was about 4 meters away when all of a sudden a very large black cat came walking out. By luck it was walking away and somehow did not see me. Somehow I wasn't scared - it felt great.

One Sunday I decided, because it was a nice day, to go to my local park in the woods. I was about to enter the park when I heard a rustling from the bushes behind me. I turned around and saw nothing. I proceed to go into the park when I heard another rustling followed by a deep snarl. I sprinted back the way I came. Since then I have kept my eyes and ears open at all times.

27/07/06 - I was taking my dog for a walk in the fields beyond St Fagans Folk Museum yesterday about 6pm when I noticed a large black cat crossing the field ahead of me. It was a lot longer than a domestic cat and it seemed to run low and sleek. It didn't notice me for about 30 seconds and then as I got closer it bolted into a wood.
It was twice the size of my dog, a young border terrier.

At 1am on 10th July 2006 I was driving from a friends house when I spotted a large black creature running up the road in the distance. I often see rabbits and hedgehogs on this road as it's in the middle of two built up areas and has waste ground either side. I put the full beam on, because the size immediately shocked me, and I realised that I was driving behind a very large sleek black big cat. It was larger than a labrador, with a long lack tail and was moving along very quickly until it swerved into an opening in the field to a car park. I was driving at speed behind the animal which was I have no doubt a Puma, and as soon as it disappeared from view. I pulled over and rung my boyfriend, in shock at what I had witnessed. I wish I'd had a camera because I know no one will believe me. That's understandable because I was sceptical until I saw it with my own eyes.

On Sunday 11th of June around 5.30 pm, my wife, children and I took a trip up to Hafod farm in Goytre to show the children deer. As we were coming along the mountain road leading to the farm we saw a large black cat to the right of us approximately 15 foot away. Around this time last year we were up this very same mountain and I found a dead deer with puncture wounds to its neck and hind leg. I contacted the Forestry Commission about the dead deer and they told me that it had been shot by an air rifle and possible that their dogs or a fox might have been feeding off the dead body. The large cat and deer spot were no more than 50 foot apart. I believe this cat roams the mountain of Goytre which leads onto Margam mountain

My house fronts on to the river Ely and the local kids often play in the woods. My sons came home one day last summer and told me that they had found some huge paw prints in the soft mud by the rivers edge they never went down there again. My hubby also told me that a few years ago while returning from a friend's house he was passing the lane that runs through Pentwyn. It was about 2.30am and he was going to take this short cut when a large black cat jumped into the lane and jumped over in to the bushes. H e said that it wasn't an ordinary housecat as i's size filled the lane and it had a long thick tail.

There have been several sightings of a very large black cat in the foothills of the Black Mountains, one at Llanigon by a local builder, also a sighting at Velindre about 4 miles from Talgarth. This latter sighting was told to me by a local man who I had never met previously and it came up in casual conversation. There also has been a sighting of a young puma-like animal near the village of Bronllys walking the main road.
Many of these incidents never come to press as it is believed on the advice of the police that it is played down. One reported incident that did make the press was a sightng near Llangorse of a large black cat and at at nearby Bwlch. These did make the local paper.

August bank holiday About 1991.Returning from cardiff wales airport after watching concorde depart on an excursion flight. We were traveling away from the airport with my father driving and my mother as front seat passenger. We were on port road about half a mile from the airport [travelling towards barry] we spotted a fully grown female African lioness about 100 yards away on the farm to the right.
This was not a puma as I managed to get a good but brief view through binoculars
{to watch concorde] as we slowed down.
We could not stop because of traffic' but it was a hot clear day and the lioness was slinking along a hedgerow keeping low.
Strange enough but wrapped around one back leg was either a bandage or plastic
strip this was also trailing about 3-4 feet behind the animal.
To us it appeared to have just escaped from somewhere ?.
This was about 1 mile from the old barry zoo but I don't know if it was still open at that time. There were no people out on the farm at the time.

I recently visited Wales to see my relatives, and took a stroll in the fields with my cousin and her dog. We were walking along the trails when we spotted a dead fox amongst the grass. We went to look, and the dog started barking at something behind us. The fox had the lower half of his body chewed of. We turned to look behind us, and we spotted a black figure lying down. We quitened the dog and backed away. We got to the car and while we were driving, we saw the black, cattish figure chasing us. Luckily, we made it home. I am never going there again!!!

Over the years there have been many sightings and animal attacks around the Forest attributed to big cats. There was even a TV programme about the big game hunter who was brought in from Canada, I believe, who said that he could see signs of big cats all over the place but, as ever, nothing more came of that. It would be interesting to know if anybody is mapping these events to see if there's any pattern?

Sorry to sound nasty or anything, but the people saying that this stuff is ok are so wrong. These cats are killing farm animals and ruining people's livelihoods. It's not like it's just 'a couple of sheep.' And this isn't their natural habitat anyway. People aren't used to it and they don't expect it. If it was normal, why would this page exist? And it would show respect best to 'interupt them' and take them out of Wales, not leave them there.

At around 9pm last autumn in a field in Pontsticill (near Merthyr Tydfil), my friend and I saw a very large black cat bigger than a labrador. It didn't see us as we were stood in the treeline, and we were able to watch it leisurely walk the length of the field then dissappear into the bushes.
In the surrounding areas we have found severely mutilated remains of sheep - half a head or entire bottom jaws missing, etc.
I'm not sure if foxes are that strong...

Couple of years ago, my friend and I had just left Cardiff and were travelling through the Rhondda to get back to the West Midlands. I'm not sure which road we were on, but we'd gone through Penrhyn and eventually came out in Abercynon. Right up on the mountain-top, my headlights picked out what looked to me like an extremely large, black cat. Way too large to be a domestic cat. I had to look at the road, but my friend carried on seeing it for a little longer. She too was convinced of what we saw. Later on a friend's dad, from Mountain Ash, told us that there had been rumours of a panther up there for as long as he'd known.

Me and my mate were walking home one evening, after being at a friend's house. We had stopped because my mate needed to do her shoelace. It was then we heard this weird growling noise. I thought it was my mate, but she swore it wasn't her. We had a flash light because it was really dark, so we looked around. It was then we saw a large black creature eating something that looked an awful lot like a lamb. It looked at us and dropped its food. Me and my mate were terrified cos we had heard about pumas and stuff. We shone the torch in its eye which distracted it, then we ran like hell. Suddenly we heard this screeching noise and our hearts literally stopped. It was chasing us. Then my mate tripped over and I landed on top of her. We were so sure we were going to die, but nothing came. We got up and legged in all the way to my house. We have been going in the car ever since. But we saw it again - thankfully not as closly. It will be a life time before either of us walk home again.

Me and 3 of my mates came up to the Black Hills a couple of days ago. We went on a long hike into what seemed like the middle of no-where. It was quite foggy and the sun had just gone down. We were in a field, and found ourselves approaching a figure in the distance. It didn't seem to move much so we got closer, and when about 5 metres away, we saw what ACTUALLY was a panther staring right back at us. We huddled together to look like something big, as it started to approach us slightly, growling. I was wondering what I'd do if it attacked us! We then edged away as fast as possible. Luckily it didn't follow us! People ask me if we were taking drugs! I'm glad we're still alive... Well it's something to tell the grandchildren!

When he looked closely he saw it was more like a cat with a very long tail. It then stood up and jumped towards the bushes. At first I did not believe him but a few weeks later there was another sighting of a big cat not far away. Could this be the Beast of Tonmawr? We never really believed stories of big cats roaming the Welsh hills until two weeks ago when we spotted a big white cat on the Billy Wynt (Y Graig) in Llantrisant. We sat and watched it for five minutes trying to size it up against the landscape and realised that it couldn't have been an ordinary cat. From a distance it reminded us of a white Tiger, because of its shape and feline movements. All other sightings seem to have been of black big cats, therefore we feel this was a very unusual sighting. Has anyone else seen this white cat?

My ex husband told me this.... in 2000 he was employed as a taxi driver in the Pontypridd area. It was late one evening (after closing time) he dropped a fair of at Glyncoch in Pontypridd and was driving back towards the town on the main road when, suddenly, he had to do an emergency stop because a big black cat ran in front of his car that was approx the same height from the floor to the top of the bonnet, it was a citroen xantia so not a small car! Then, it ran onto side of the road and turned round, and my ex saw his large pointed white teeth and even it's claws. It hissed at him and ran off down the banking towards waste ground leaving large footprints in the mud. Who knows what's out there?

Before the JIF forest was cut down on Brithdir mountain a friend of mine went there to cut the top off a pine tree for christmas. As he was sat in the tree about 10ft off the ground he heard the crunching of leaves which he thought at first may have been a sheep from the neighbouring farm, until he heard a growl. He looked down and saw a large black cat looking back at him. It stayed at the bottom of the tree long into the night and my colleague was stuck there for close to 6 hours. It was only when the cat moved on did he come down and 'peg it' back to the village. It was either that or freeze to death!!

When I was younger I always remember my father telling me that in the 70s he knew of a very wealthy man from the Lampeter area who released two pumas into the wild. Apparently the pumas were regular visitors back to their old ground for years, so it's obvious that these animals can survive well in our climate. So if they can survive, they can obviously breed, so if you think of all the other animals released in to the wild it starts to make sense.

I saw a big cat at St.Donats in the vale a few years ago when I was on my way fishing, it was about 7am in the morning on a summers day and the Puma like cat was sleeping in the hedge on the clifftop, I got to about 10 feet from it before I saw the animal, it got up and ran into the woods.
I also saw footprints on a freshly seeded field after rain down near Llamihangel which after research looked like Panther paw prints.
The best though happened today (16.8.04) - more on this when I get the pictures.

Last year, I travelled out with a couple others to Monmouthshire to visit a family friend of ours. We come annually, at financial allowance, and never until now have we seen anything abnormal. I was outside, sitting on the lawn playing with my youngest niece, when something in the distance caught her eye. She told me to look, and I saw a large cat-like shape far in the distance. Its pitch black colour made it appear like a silhouette against clear skies. I leapt up, grabbed my niece and we both ran inside, to tell of our sighting. When I had led others outside to show them, it was too late. The cat had gone, I suppose. But this was the only sighting I had ever experienced of the strange big cats out there.
