Tudor Price MBE was a cub scout on the last day of a camping trip when he heard war had broken out, and returned home to find his village deserted.

Gwen Prosser was a Londoner who returned home from school one lunchtime to be told she had to be evacuated to Ilfracombe immediately, without even saying goodbye to her friends. She later joined the Women's Land Army and met a future Oscar winner on a London Underground train.

Grenville Jones recalls dropping food parcels into Burma, and how he got engaged to his girlfriend by proxy as he couldn't get back from India.

Tom O'Neill tells how his father was called up for training to join the tank regiment, but before seeing action his unit was retrained as infantry, named the South Wales Borderers and sent to Burma.

Stephen Bates talks of seeing a glider pilot who acted quickly to save himself.

This film was made in partnership with the National Library of Wales, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, and the Royal British Legion
