His comments upset me - it appears he came from either a middle class back ground or well off. For anyone on low income or poor background they suffered terribly. Yes, if you had money you could go to jumble sales charity shops etc. We had to wait for the rag and bone man with his horse and cart to come around, and see if he would let us have an old torn pair of trousers that could be patched in exchange for some empty jam jars. He doesn't know how the other half survived. Very lucky family.
