A great walk on the top of Caerphilly Mountain with sweeping views over Caerphilly into the valleys and over Cardiff and the Bristol Channel, passing the Black Cock Inn, a convenient half way point.
A fairly hilly walk of about 5 kilometres (3 miles), but well worth it with fine views and a variety of scenery.

What a lovely area to go walking at the weekend, so relaxing walking along the mountain with some friends. A gentle walk is a good day out.

Garn Llwyd was a thached cottage up a track from the junction of Mountain Rd and Watford Rd. My mothers home, nee Williams. I lived with my Gran a couple of years during the war,and I have many happy memories of my times there. One outstanding, the lights going on after the end of the war which we saw from the lookout point at the wall which was used to look for familly approaching. To see the glow of the town lights after the blackout was uplifting and a delight.

Caerphilly Mountain could be seen from where I grew up in Penyrheol. At the foot was the Grammar School where we looked with hope for our future, I spent seven OK years there. In the snow we sleighed down the golf course at breakneck speed and I snared a rabbit on the school boundary fence. I followed hare tracks on one of those days. In the plantations were chantrelle, morel and boletus fungi, I wish I knew how good they were then. Always there would be apples on the trees in the gardens of the 'rich' houses. What a crime!

Stumbled on this site while searching for something else... My mother was born in Caerphilly (hello Auntie Glenys and Uncle Ken) and I remember a beutiful walk I had on the mountain on a Sunday morning. You could hear the church bells ringing and enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the valley ... I must vist again.

Just recently got into walking and can't get enough of the taff trail and Caerphilly mountain there are so many different ways of climbing it and the views are well worth the effort needed!

I'll never forget standing on the top, overlooking the whole town as fork lightning travelled up the valleys and you could see it all! Amazing. Excellent walks and views and a burger van to die for! :)

i looked at the walk to see where my ancestors lived as they were part of a community that lived on the mountain and frequented the black cock inn and others that worshipped in the watford chapel.many thanks

I would like to find a good map of this route or book. I have been to the information shop, but they do not have one. I have not found a clear and useful book yet.
Also the sign and maps on the Taff trail are rubbish.

I live in Caerphilly. It's the best place there is. Plenty of walks and good pubs and good off road fun too, with Good woodland walks and a good town for shopping.

Walking up to the top of the mountain was good. A special stop at the Black Cock Inn was most welcome. Anyone interested in this should try it. If you're a beginner or not, this is truly a must.
