Scrap Fashion

Denim dress by Heledd Jones

Last updated: 17 July 2007

Heledd Jones from Dinas Powys models the denim dress that was a winner in the final of the BBC Blast Scrap Fashion competition.

Heledd, aged 19, was one of two winners chosen at the final's showcase on July 21 during the Blast at the Serpentine Gallery Festival in Hyde Park.

The only finalist from Wales, Heledd took the competition's brief - to create fashion from recycled material - and added a touch of class.

"I wanted to make a garment that was a complete contradiction to people's perceptions of a denim garment," she said.

"I was adamant that I wouldn't use any of the design aspects of a pair of jeans in order to create my dress, as I wanted to keep away from the norm, and use the denim only as my material.

"I'm extremely pleased with the results, and the feedback I have received about my dress has been very complementary."

Heledd found the BBC Blast competition on the internet while doing some research on Wayne Hemingway for college, but put it to the back of her mind while she finished her final major project at Glamorgan College of Art and Design.

This left Heledd just two days before the deadline to get cracking and make her dress.

Wayne Hemingway himself was on the panel which selected her design as a finalist from hundreds of entrants.

Heledd is looking to stay in the fashion world after another design course at the University of Glamorgan.

"My dream is to own my own boutique of bridal and evening wear, designed and made by myself, and I felt that my denim dress reflected this passion for glamorous evening wear."

Heledd's wedding dressHeledd, and the 10 other finalists from around Britain, attended a day-long fashion masterclass with ethical designer Pierre Garroudi before having their outfit modelled at the showcase. She updated her design by making a wedding dress on the day from denim jeans and a bed valance (left).

The judging panel included talent from BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Pierre Garroudi, representatives from the BBC and competition associates, The Ethical Fashion Consultancy. "I'm honoured to have been given the chance to even meet Pierre Garroudi, let alone the chance to be mentored by him!" said Heledd.

"Although I'm also very nervous, as I know my textile skills are limited, but I'm just going to make the most of this brilliant opportunity."

As one of the two winners, Heledd now has the opportunity to attend a week's design masterclass with Pierre Garroudi, Junky Styling, Equa and Traid, before experiencing the ultimate prize of watching her finished garment join Garroudi's catwalk at the Paris Ethical Fashion Show in October 2007.
