Plots With A View

Brenda Blethyn and Alfred Molina in Plots With A View

Last updated: 03 December 2005

The Rhondda became Valleywood for the making of this comic movie about rival undertakers. Did you see any stars in Treorchy and Cwmparc?

  • See some scenes from the movie

Filming took place in October and November 2001, with stars such as Brenda Blethyn, Christopher Walken and Alfred Molina appearing at various locations, including Treorchy cemetery, the library and a local supermarket.

The movie won great acclaim and a Bafta Cymru award in 2002, but to this date has never been released to UK cinemas.

Plots With A View - also known as Undertaking Betty - tells the story of Betty (Brenda Blethyn) whose teenage romance with local undertaker Boris Plotz (Alfred Molina) is rekindled when she makes arrangements for her mother-in-law's funeral.

But she's trapped in a marriage to two-timing mayor Hugh Rhys-Jones (Robert Pugh), while Boris has his own problems when hotshot American undertaker Frank Featherbed (Christopher Walken) arrives to revolutionise the Welsh funeral business.

The cast includes many other well-known faces from British film and TV - maybe you rubbed shoulders with the stars yourself? If so, we want to hear all about it!

Although the film wasn't released in the UK, the movie has been shown in Australia, New Zealand and in Germany, where it was called Grabgeflüster - Liebe kann Särge versetzen (Grave whisper - love can shift coffins).

But it has been released on a Region 1 DVD under the name Undertaking Betty - you should be able to find it via the leading shopping and auction websites.

I was lucky enough to see a DVD of this film Plots with a View or as it is now known Undertaking Betty. Excellent comedy and I knew most of the locations coming from the Rhondda Valley.

I'm currently working in Manila in the Philippines and the film has just been shown on local cable tv. Having not been home for 2yrs it made me so homesick. The accent, the scenery, the local humour...I just loved the way Brenda's character said the word 'trollope'! Then trying to explain that word to my filipino friends...

I watched the movie on a cable station. It was comical and touching. Betty was in a mess of a marriage with a snake of a husband. Boris was an honest, good person, who always loved Betty. I was happy that good triumphed over evil in the end. I guess sometimes bad guys finish last ... love it! It was great. The scenery was fantastic, too.

It was my great thrill to be asked to record the organ music for the funeral scenes in this film (and get two mentions in the credits!). I had to buy my copy from the USA and then search for a region 1 DVD player. What a great pity it is not readily avalable here in Wales. I play the organ at Margam crematorium, Port Talbot, and I am certain the local undertakers and clergy would just love to see it!

I loved this film. I saw it last year on a Brazilian TV station.Christopher Walken is amazing. Congratulations!

This was shown on our TV station in Australia SBS in February 2007. Just lovely, thoroughly enjoyed it. I used to live near Newport and my uncle lived up the Rhondda so it made me a little homesick. I phoned my sister in West Wales to tell her about the movie and she said that she had never heard of it, which seems a shame that it wasn't released in the UK.

Have just received an email from friend in Florida who had seen it last Saturday and was so excited about it she has told me to see ASP.

    Don Sanders, Australia
Great film - shows that the British film industry can still make comedy. I can't understand why it hasn't been seen in pom land?

    Emma Pursey from Pontypridd
I was an extra in the film but still haven't actually seen it! I'd quite like to get hold of it, even though I'll probably be quite embarrassed to see myself dressed as a giant bumble bee in the fairground scene!

    Paul Billington, Port Talbot
I own this film and it is brilliant, for those who want it, look on ebay, (Look for Plots with a view or Undertaking Betty). They do have discs from Germany and they are in English, great stuff!

    Sheila Vutlin, Devon
This film is terrific and I cannot understand why it has not been on general release - we laughed so much. Nice to have a good comedy for a change - please please release it - we saw it onboard a P&O cruise ship.

I want to see this movie. I love Alfred Molina. I saw all of his movies and I loved them!I`m 15 years old and I am very mature for my age. I know some of my older friends who saw the movie, and they found it particulary different and funny. I am British in a way cause my father is, and I love English movies. Alfred Molina will always be my favorite actor and you bet this movie will be seen by me!

    Shwn Williams, Nantes, France
I saw Plots with a View at the Film Festival in Dinard two years ago. Even then, the producers were looking for a distributor. A great pity that it has not been released more extensively. A very enjoyable film with a beautiful cast of actors. I was also pleased to learn parts were made in Treorchy as my family was from very nearby in Penyrenglyn.

    Gareth Williams, Rhondda
I have found that so far all the comic films made about Wales have been great, the best so far being Twin Town. However I have not seen this film. I am sure it will be another hit, so come on all you movie buffs, where can we get a copy?

    Daryl Jones; Cwmparc, Rhondda
A lot of filming took place at my home village, which was so cool! A girl i know even got to be an extra in the film! We all really want to see it now though...maybe i'll buy it off ebay!!

    Joanne
Excellent film, managed to get it from a company in Holland via ebay, the cast is terrific and the welsh accents are very convincing, especially Lee Evans (His grandfather was a pontypridd man) so he deffinately has the lilt.

    Twink McCabe of Auckland NZ
I so loved this film - one of the funniest ever seen. I have a collection of over 350 DVD's and it is just not complete without this movie. I can not understand why they won't release it. For those frustrated fans - go get the DVD of "Very Annie Mary" as that is in the same class as "Plots" Rachel Griffiths at her best and funny as, with a really great and inspiring ending. I do so miss "Plots"..... Twink

    Colin from Treorchy
Imagine my surprise comming in from a full day sunbathing on deck only to see Treorchy Cem' on my cabin telly, an omen perhaps. Brilliant film that needs to go out on DVD.

    Alan Simpson Llantrisant
The majority of filming that took place in Llantrisant took place in the front of my father in law's house. It was converted into a funeral parlour. I have found the dvd for sale on a website in Australia, not sure if it will work in UK players though.

    Derek King Western Australia
I saw "Plots with a View" on video and thought it to be well acted and incredibly funny. I used to live a couple of miles from Treorchy in a place called Tonypandy so I was extremely pleased to enjoy such a fine production.

    Mal from Liverpool
Saw this on a cruise (Princess would you believe)Loved it. I can't believe I can't buy it in the UK! Wonderful

    K from USA
I have heard a lot about Plots with a View. However I have been unable to find it here either for rent or purchases. I believe it has been released in the US under the name of Undertaking Betty. Will you please tell me where I can purchase it. Thanks..

    Alun Childs Chicago IL USA
I was lucky enough to see the movie on a cruise ship sailing from Seattle to Victoria Canada. I thought the movie was hilarious and couldn't stop laughing. My family originates from Wales specifically Pontypool. So I can imagine the movie easily being real life. I am desperate to purchase the movie when and where can I do this as it would make great xmas presents for my family here in the states and back home, as I have raved about this movie for months now. Please help.

    Annie from Cardiff
I saw the film flying home from the Maldives 2003, what a brilliant film, so funny. I watched it with head phones on (as you do )and I just couldn't stop laughing out loud. Can't wait for it to be released, and I'm very disappointed it is taking so long.

    Philippa Holmes from Llantrisant
Brenda Blethyn, Alfred Molina and the director came into my house to use the bathroom. The film crewe had set up just outside the gates of my house. Brenda Blethyn had actually left her microphone on when using the bathroom!!

    Tim Weldon in New Zealand
Loved your article on the film Plots With A View. We've just seen it here in NZ and I'm shocked that the film has not yet been released in the UK. Surely this isn't true? If it is, it's a crying shame - the British will love it! We lived in Wales until moving back to NZ just over 2 years ago. It was nice to catch up on some news via your excellent website.

Rob and Jen from Adelaide Oz
We saw Plots with a View last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. We came out feeling as though we were part and parcel of the film. It was so realistic to the Welsh way of life. Thank you for a great light entertainment film...should be more of them.

    Rich in Sydney
Brilliant film... well done Wales for producing top entertainment... makes a lovely change to see a good movie with only one Yank accent... Treorchy may now be a tourist destination the film has certainly put it on the map... dai iawn.

    Rob From Sydney
I saw this film yesterday in Sydney. It's very funny and well directed. Christopher Walken and Lee Evans are hilarious. Alfred Molina's Welsh accent is spot on and Naomi Watts is crackin' too!
