When I Found Out

Zowie Brennan

By Zowie Brennan

I was over my sister's house. We went swimming and my sister said to me 'you have gone big on your stomach'. I had an idea I was pregnant. I said to my sister 'will you come with me to have a test - I think I'm pregnant'.

So me and her boyfriend went down Tesco to get a test and I came home and did the test. I was in the bathroom looking at the test and it went blue. I sat there thinking about it.

I went into my sister's bedroom. 'I'm pregnant' I told her. She said 'you will have to tell your mother'. I said 'no, she will kill me'.

When my mother came over I sat on my niece's bed. I never said anything. My mother was crying. She gave me a hug and said 'what have you done you silly girl'. Then I started crying.

We went over to my house and we talked about it. My mother never liked my boyfriend and I'm only 14. I'm too young to have a baby and I'm not with my boyfriend any more. Anyway he's no good - he would leave me to bring the baby up on my own.

My mother wanted me to go for a termination, but I went to the doctor and I heard the heart beat. I said to my mother 'I'm not going for a termination'. My mother and my nan were sad, but it's my baby and it's up to me what I want.

We went up to see my boyfriend's mother. We knocked on the door and his mother answered. My mother said 'Diane you are going to be a nanny'. She said 'what, Zowie's pregnant?' She was very shocked. She said 'I'm going to kill him'.

Then we went home and my mother said, 'well, it's in the open now'.

I went up Penrhys to see my boyfriend. He asked me what I was having and I said I didn't know. 'Anyway it's nothing to do with you, you ain't having anything to do with the baby', I said.

When I went for a scan, I lay on the bed and the nurse put jelly stuff on my stomach and she pressed down on my stomach. You could see my baby moving in my stomach. It was a nice thought that you could see my baby. My mother was happy to see the scan, you could see the leg moving.

I'm only fourteen and I know it's going to change my life, but I'm looking forward to seeing my baby and bringing it up to be a nice person. Everyone is saying you have wrecked your life, but I can always go back to school after I have the baby.
