My Caesarean

Teen Mams - Dan

By Dan

I was 37 weeks pregnant. I walked in to the scanning room with my dad and lay on the bed. They squirted that cold gel on to my belly, put the probe on and started scanning. They were really concentrating and then turned to say something to me.

My heart stopped. I thought they were going to tell me that I had lost my baby, but they told me that he was breech and that I didn't have a lot of amniotic fluid around the baby.

They sent me in to see the doctor and he told the nurse to put me on a monitor. The monitor was really uncomfortable. They told me to press the button every time the baby moved, so I did. After half an hour, they were happy everything was fine. They told me to give it a week to see if the baby turned.

I went home and worried in case I had to have a caesarean. I didn't want a caesarean. I wanted to give birth so I could have skin-to-skin contact.

I went to the hospital again and they scanned me, but the baby was still breech. They sent me in to see the doctor who told me that my baby was only going to be born weighing 2-3lb, and that I had to have a caesarean.

He phoned the Royal Glamorgan Hospital to see if there was room for me for the next day, but there wasn't, so I was booked in for the following Wednesday.

In the car on the way to hospital were me, my boyfriend, my mum and dad. His mother and my sister were coming down at later.

They made me wear a nightie that was open at the back. I felt stupid. They made me take off my knickers and bra. Then they put a catheter up me and it stung like mad. I felt like I needed a pee. They sent my boyfriend next door to get changed. Five minutes later he walked in and I burst out laughing. He was wearing a blue bandanna, blue t-shirt, blue trousers and white wellies.

Then they took me into theatre. They gave me a spinal anaesthetic. It just felt like a sharp scratch. Then they gave me a drip in my hand and put something that looked like a bulldog clip on the tip of my middle finger. I could feel my legs going hot right the way up to my boobs. I was numb, I couldn't feel anything.

They put the curtain up and then my boyfriend came in the room. I could feel them pulling around in my stomach. I felt sick. They squirted something into my drip to stop me being sick.

They put the radio on for me. Craig David and Sting, Rise and Fall came on. 20 seconds later I heard a cry. They shouted, "it's a baby boy". They then weighed him and he was 5lb 8.5oz. They wrapped him in a towel and gave him to my boyfriend. He was beautiful.

They took him and dressed him, then gave him to me. I stared at him for about three hours - he was perfect. On the ward, everyone was there waiting for me. My mum started crying as she picked him up. He's her first grandchild.

It took me ages to realise that I was a mum. From the second I saw him I loved him with all my heart. He is 18 months old now and he is everywhere. I still love him to bits even though he's wicked and the only time I have peace is when he's sleeping. But that's my life now, and I wouldn't change it for the world.
