I'm 16 with a 17 month old son and find it difficult to manage my money. I'm a madam for shopping no matter who or what it is for!
I like to try and stick to a certain amount to spend depending on what I want or need.
As I am working, I earn £70 - £80 a week as well as claiming Working Tax Credit, which is £119 a week, Child Tax Credit that is £45 a week, and I have £67 a month for Child Benefit.
I have all my benefits paid directly in to my bank account. That's left there until I go shopping!
I want to improve by not going shopping as much. It will be really difficult as I really enjoy shopping. I tend to go shopping when I'm stressed. I call it retail therapy!I want to save money rather than spend it as I am hoping to learn to drive in a few months time. I also wish to save up, as it is my son's birthday and I am hoping to organise a party for him!
If you want to sort out your benefits you can go to your local Job Centre and ask to speak to an adviser. He/she will be able to explain what you're entitled to. If you do this and find that they are not helpful you can go to the Citizens Advice Bureau or there is someone in Sure Start that can help.
If you find they've told you what your entitled to and given you forms to fill in, make sure you fill them in immediately and take them back straight away. Your benefits should be sorted out within two weeks. If it is not sorted in this time, make sure you phone and keep on to them, as sometimes they mess you about!
