I lived opposite this park in the Garage then called Despenser Gardens Garage. This was 1951. This photograph was taken from the roof of the garage. The parks were kept immaculately then, with the Park Keeper on duty/based in his hut. These parks were a green lung in the city streets. Precious memories of playing "allies" in the gutter of DeBurgh Street, and beating the trolley buses to school in Canton, thus saving the fare for all kinds of luxuries!

When I saw this photo it brought back so many happy memories of the gardens in their 'heyday'. Growing up in Dispenser Street in the 50's the gardens were the centre of our world especially during the long summer days. A lot of time was spent dodging the 'parkie'who watched us from the window in his 'hut'. We played on the grass nearest the hut at our peril! There was a kindergarden school opposite the park gates run by Mrs Clemo and the children used the park at break times.
I remember sitting on the benches chatting til late in the summer and my Dad, now passed on, calling me from the front door across the road. A happy childhood in Riverside- thanks for the memories!.
