Jim Stagg, Cardiff
The building you see, just to the right of the railway bridge, is The York Hotel. I lived there in the early 60s. Although the canal you see in the picture had been filled-in by then, we still sold bottles of "Cure-I-Can" which was a linament that was used to rub on the fetlocks of the horses that towed the canal barges. Over the years, customers of the pub had used the linament to cure all sorts of ailments including rhumatics. They claimed that a few drops in the bath gave them a new lease of life, although I was never tempted to try it.
