It's a fact that there are more people in the world with a Chinese mum than any other kind of mum. I'm one of those people, so I guess that makes me kind of average!
When my mum is on the phone to Malaysia, babbling away in Cantonese, that's when I get a bit bewildered. My dad is now able to give a translation, thanks to years of practice.
My mum is one of seven, which makes the extended family the most bewildering thing.
These people are all related to me, but again until quite recently there are loads I hadn't met. Most of their names seemed to begin with Ping.
Several hundred Malaysian ringgitts later I was over there and everything began to make sense.
Por Por is our word for grandmother, she prefers to chat in a mixture of Chinese, Malay and English, often in the same sentence.
I wonder how she feels about spawning an entire dynasty?
