Heirloom

Andree Morgan-Andrews

There was no preferential treatment, so why I was chosen as a ten year old over my six siblings to receive these treasured heirlooms, I can't say.

As a ten year old my grandmother had received them from her mother who had been presented with the bangle on leaving the service of a titled lady.

Four rubies were removed from the bangle, being considered too rich for the working class.

The illustrations and words in the book - a book of daily prayers - fascinated me and both items remind me of a caring, hard-working woman.

Which of my children will treasure them, I can't say. But then, there's always grandchildren!

Stories from the Streets of Cardiff - this film was made as part of a Digital Storytelling workshop run by BBC Wales.

Wonderful speech, Mum. Will you be giving me your treasured items as I am the only girl?
