I was eight, remember it well
It's fun to tell
We celebrated the end of Word War Two
There was a big bonfire too.
Oh the excitement, it was great,
We children got to stay up late.
Our neighbors and family gathered in the street
North Road turned into a place to meet
Singing and screaming at the top of our voices
We could play all night, with all kinds of choices.
.
We held hands as we sang
Some had bells; never a better sound rang,
Lots to eat like sandwiches and cake
There were so many treats for us to take.
How happy we all seemed to be
Some of the men were already home you see
The families were together once more
It was overwhelming for sure.
But there was an ache in everyone's heart
Because there were still many far apart
Some were still away, across the sea
And some who were not there never would be.
It was over now, the party told us so
No more blackouts or sirens to go
Life would be easy, street lights on all night.
So happy that everything would be alright.
