Fairy Castle

Castell Coch - photo by Peter Thomas

Emma Tysoe

Ever since I was a child we would see Castel Coch on the mountain side as my father drove passed it. He told me it was a fairy castle and I'd always wanted to visit it.

Many years later, my friends and I wanted to go mountain bike riding and decided to take the Taff Trail up to the castle.

It took a while to get there and I couldn't cycle up the steep hill to the castle so I had to walk but when we got to the top it was amazing to see castle standing tall surrounded by the forest.

We had a picnic and then cycled all around the forest but I didn't see any fairies. Maybe one day I'll get to see the inside of the castle and find some fairies.

My grandfather always took us to see interesting places around Cardiff. We use to go by bus from Gabalfa, changing, I think, at Llandaff or Fairwater. In those days, late 50`s early 60`s, there were no restrictions and you could wander all over the castle without meeting hardly anyone else. The walk up to the castle from the bus through the woods was wonderful. I still remember the heavy scent of wild garlic.

Carol Adkinson (nee Ward) now in Suffolk,
I can well remember some wonderful picnics we had at Castell Coch, and at the Wenault, after going to see inside the Castell. It truly is magnificent and magical! My sister and I enjoyed every second, but the visits came to an abrupt halt when Linda and I saw an adder in the ferns, and Mum was told that we should be careful playing in the bushes, as there were quite a few there - they liked the sandy soil, I believe - so we didn't go again! We missed the visits, and now, when we pass the Castle on the A48 on our way to Pembs. I still look at the magical building, and remember the happy and joyous times we had there.
