The large beechwood canopy of the woods prevents direct light penetrating to ground level in most paces, so there are only occasional plants to be found such as the birds nest orchid.

The wood attracts many birds including woodpeckers, nuthatch, sparrowhawk, kestrel and tawny owl. Clinging precariously to the cliffs are yew and whitebeam trees.
There are many waterfalls within the reserve, where the air hangs heavy next to the fast moving water. Many species of moss can be found growing here and a huge variety of fungi in the autumn months.

I used to live in Llanelly Hill - this is a great area for walking and exploring. I hope the new road work won't spoil this diverse countryside too much. The heritage trail is easy to travel along and the views are wonderful.

It is a nice lovely walk and I want to know more about the walls and various brickwork that crops up along the way. Didn't see many/any birds but the river was a torrent so I think the dippers may have decided not to dip!! Would recommend though and only 15 mins from where I live so I WILL be back!

There is a new free leaflet availalable produced by Llanelly Community Council, called Clydach Gorge Heritage Trails, it includes four walks in this overlooked area. The leaflet is available from the National Park Information Centre Abergavenny.

I used to live in blackrock near the top of the picture - it is such a beautiful area. It's such a shame thay are going to widen the road going through the heart of it and ruin some of its natural splendor.
