Craig Cerrig Gleisiad

Craig Cerrig Gleisiad & Fan Frynych Reserve

Last updated: 03 April 2008

High in the Brecon Beacons, this reserve is home to rare to artic-alpine plants and provides a safe nesting place for many birds.

The Craig Cerrig Gleisiad & Fan Frynych Reserve was once part of an area of ancient hunting and farming land called the Great Forest.

Scrub still grows on and around its rocky outcrops, and glacial debris is scattered across the area.

The steep crags prevent sheep from nibbling rare vegetation such as purple saxifrage.

Purple SaxifrageA variety of upland birds can be seen here - raven, peregrine and ring ouzel.

There are also Bronze and Iron Age remnants, Roman road building and medieval field patterns.

Co-ordinates: SN992269

Location: Footpath off A470 between Storey Arms and Libanus and from many other roads surrounding the site.

Contact: The reserve is managed by the Countryside Council for Wales, Maes-y-Ffynnon, Penrhosgarnedd, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2DW
Tel: 0845 1306 229

Dave Stephens. Australia.
I used to bird watch at Craig Cerrig Gleisiad in the 1960s. The peregrine falcon used to nest just above the raven's nest. I visited the area in 2001 and found both birds still nesting in the same places.

Craig Cerrig Gleisiad is one of my favourite locations when walking the Beacons. The views are superb and the cliffs and glacial features magnificent. The variety of wildlife gives much pleasure also.

Peregrine falcon One notable day, 13/8/06, myself and a friend were fortunate enough to see a pair of Red Kites, a single Red Kite, a number of Buzzards and a rarely seen Peregrine all 'working' the area. The Peregrine in particular was wonderful to see and I was gratified to come away with that elusive photograph of a Peregrine 'in the wild'. I cannot praise this location highly enough.

Us, as a school geography group, found our round-trip to South Wales was very enjoyable. One of the highlights of our visit was our walk up to Craig Cerrig Gleisiad, where we viewed some spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, & also had a go at measuring the valley sides for our coursework. We would recommend it to walkers.
