Bedford Park

Bedford Park

Last updated: 07 April 2008

Named after Birmingham industrialist, John Bedford who acquired the estate in 1770 and lived in Plas Cefn - now known as Bedford House.

Bedford Park contains the Celtic Trail, a path for cycling, walking and wheelchairs and runs from Tondu to Frog Pond Wood.

The route is seven miles passing through a variety of natural habitats and local wildlife including foxes, often seen from the path along the old railway while buzzards, bullfinches, whitethroat and kestrels are among the many birds to be seen here.

Butterflies are a common sight in this natural wilderness as well as many different species including common blues, meadow browns, tortoise-shells and skippers.

Amenities in the park include way-marked nature trails that are easy to follow with paths suitable for short and longer walks, mostly on well-surfaced pathways, which are easily accessible to all.

There are cycle-ways where visitors can travel along the route of the old railway with numerous picnic sites and free car parking.

The Park is also suitable for disabled people as the main path through the site is easily accessible.

There are also toilets with disabled facilities. Bedford Park is open all year (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day) and admission is free.

Co-ordinates: SS838829

Location: From the M4 leave at junction 36 and take the A4063 towards Sarn - leading onto the B4281. Follow this road through the village of Cefn Cross before entering Cefn Cribwr. On approaching Cefn Cross follow signs for Bedford Park.
