New Tredegar: A Poem

By John R Jones

I live in New Tredegar
It was a thriving town
But now I am sorry to say
It is completely run down

For example let's take School Street
It had over twenty shops
Where you could buy most anything
From fish and chips, clothes and even chops

From Gilberts and James Johns
That was starting at the top
Then Robsons, Turners, Fred Jones and Wormans
And a doctor in the middle of that lot

I have only named a few of them
That traded in those days
Can you remember any more
Because there were twenty three I say

That was in those years ago
When Elliots was at its peak
And a thousand tons of coal a day
Was done every day of the week

But since the pit has closed down
The shops have closed down too
As out of the twenty three now
There is left only one or two
