HMS Buttercup

Calvin E Morgan has sent us a poem his father wrote in 1942 to support fundraising in Bedwellty and New Tredegar for a warship.

Bedwellty residents, take heed!
Enrol to meet your Country's need.
Decide a corvette to provide
Which means a thorn in Hitler's hide
Encourage those who work this week
Lend all you can to reach the peak
Let naught your efforts undermine
Try making others toe the line
You have your chance this week.

Whatever you have given before
Aspire this week to give much more
Resolve this corvette to equip
She is Bedwellty's Battleship.
However grear the sacrifice
Increase your savings twice or thrice
Please do your best this week.

When Buttercup joins Britain's fleet,
Equiped & manned, the foe to meet,
Each resident with pride can boast-
Knowing they've helped to guard our coast.

HT (Hezekiah Thomas) Morgan, Aberbargoed
Bedwellty Warship Week, February 14th to 21st 1942
