I love Newport, because it's not some boring town where nothing ever happens. Newport's full of different people, and everyones genuine, and most people are really kind. Although it's not the cleanest of towns, it's amazing and I would never ever move!!!!
Safina from Cwmbran
I hate Newport because it's full of chavs and emos!! It's a dump and a half! Oh, and the shops are rubbish!!
Haydn Garrett USA (Carolina Celt)
I love the old Newport - now when I go back the Yob culture has taken over. Too many 'clubs' and not enough education. Witness the above notes about the "great pubs"!! Great place to be from. I had a good education and a wonderful and safe childhood on "Corpa' road". Would I be the same guy growing up there now,, NO! too violent It's still got good people, and rugby (just) but it's not enough. Glad to see they are trying with some new stuff but must get rid of some of the centre pubs, they do nothing for the place. Remember the history aand stop living it! It's turning into one big Pwyll ... scary stuff.
Gerry Rose, Newport.
I loved Newport as a thriving, bustling town of the forties and fifties. A mucky town it was from its heavy industries, but still with beautiful buildings, now sacrificed on the altar of progress; rather like society in its quest for the quick fix. Newport was then a town with a soul. It is now a soulless city, still mucky, but for different reasons to the above. The effing and blinding kids, boys and girls, youths and men pervade the city streets, spitting vitriolic messages for all to hear; spitting chewing gum which somehow seems to glue-together the fabric of the city, which allows cyclists, roller skaters and skateboarders to threaten those going about their lawful business. Its ugly modern edifices are matched only, beaten even, by the new city tip, growing like a huge carbuncle, to block the view of the channel from the lovely Belle Vue Park, recently made over at great cost. Newport has suffered dreadful planning for many years. Witness the mess that was the scene of the Chartist shootings, the Westgate Hotel. This is but one example, there are many others. Witness the lights at the junction of Belle Vue Lane and Cardiff Road, the lights which have turned many nearby roads into rat runs for drivers wishing to avoid them. I could go on ad nauseum.
Newport's surroundings are wonderful, shame about the city!
Zoe Chinery, Leicester
I love Newport, it is the place was born and grew up. It is a City with a history, full of interesting people and cheap bars! I get goose pimples when I come back on the train, smell the air and see the lushous skyline that is home.
Shaz
I love Newport because the gyals are fit lolz but job prospects could be better, the night life is kinda cool too. Stop knocking Newport, it's my home 4 life.
Alan from the Celtic Manor, Newport
I love Newport because it is forward thinking and positive toward regeneration. Newport is the Home of the Ryder Cup 2010 and by then the City Centre will have changed dramatically - an improvement for the best.
Pat from Newport
I love Newport because since I arrived here (by accident in 1963) I have grown into it and am excited by the changes taking place now. It's my home so I tolerate a few imperfections while doing what I can to improve it. Isn't that what you do if you respect and care about a place?
Penny, London
I love newport beacuase my family live there and I'm proud to be Welsh. It's nice to go home and live at a slower pace for a while. Shopping in Newport city centre is a much more pleasant experience than shopping in Oxford Street, but Newport needs to attract more shops like Cardiff. Newport is looking run down though compared to when I was a kid; especially along Corporation Road and this is a real shame.
Steven Jones from Newport
I hate Newport because of the consistently poor leadership.
Let's remove the City council democratically & appoint the City leaders that we want. This may mean not voting the way we always have. These people are too comfortable in their positions - let's stir it up!
Chris Oliver, Newport
I hate Newport beacause little thugs make this city bad, children no older than 6 or 7, shouting the odds off at 10pm.
When you get used to the new stuff they put up they take it down add rebuild it - how many roads does one city need? All the nice green areas such as Beechwood Park, Tredegar & Alway Park are either local hangout for pissheads or have been turned into a wasteland with no maintenance.
Clare Anderson, Newport
I love Newport, the new footbridge and the new theatre, especially lit up together at night. I also love the old Newport bridge with its great lights. I love to see it all lit up at night when returning on the train. The M4 and railway station means you can travel anywhere easily. I also love the trees on Fields Park Avenue.
Wendy White from Cambridge
I love Newport for my memories: Hartridge High school, living in a prefab on Treberth Estate, Christchurch Sunday school, Saturday discos at The Living Eye in Caerleon and the Kensington in Maindee. I love it because my family are still there. I do hate the ugliness and aggression in the city and now shop in Cwmbran when I'm home.
Peter Stevens, Cardiff
I Hate Newport because the people are are so rude, violent & always ready for a fight. The buildings are old & grimy. The bus station's repulsive & its letting down the town. Nothing ever changes, Newports been going down hill for years, That's why I'm not coming back!
Trina da Costa from Toronto, Canada
I love Newport I miss the town (city) where I was born & raised, and look forward to walking down memory lane and seeing the transporter bridge, visiting Pill where I went to school and lived on Wolseley Street. No matter where I live Newport will always have a special place in my heart.
Clair, Australia
I love Newport because my family is in Newport & that's really important. I love the way that Newport is being given an overhaul and it's starting to look pretty good. I think it's making people feel more positive about the place too.
Lyn from Newport
I hate Newport it's dirty, a scary place to be now. The car park near the station & the ugly Riverfront do nothing to complement the beautiful old buildings of the town. I can't understand how it ever became a city with only a few decent shops amongst all the tat. My German friends christened it 'Green Bin City' long before it was given the title, because the pavements are littered with them!
Mark Ellis from Newport
I hate Newport. For the past two years, it is very busy on the road which makes me late for work.
Ceri from Newport
I hate Newport because there is never anywhere to park your car plus when you do park it's so expensive. The buses are never on time - give me Cwmbran anytime.
Mo from Newport
I hate Newport because I feel unsafe in it. Jobs are all pretty much minimum wage so it's better to go on benefits. Drugs are too easy to get a hold of and the police don't have enough presence apart from in thier cars driving down dual carriageways.
Helen Jones from Bassaleg
I love Newport because I live there, and I appreciate the efforts that are being made to improve the look and the facilities in the town. I, too, love the flowers and the pandas. I think the best bits of Commercial Street are when you look up - we've got some lovely Victorian buildings, the council could make Newport into a modern but beautiful city centre. I do hate the traffic, though, which is terrible at the moment, and the ugliness of the 1960s and 1970s buildings. I also hate the attitude of people in town with their fags and their "f" words - I don't want my kids to grow up like them. I wouldn't dream of going into town in the night - I value my safety too much. These are issues that need to be addressed.
Abi from Newport
I love Newport because it has cool shops and it's a nice place. I love town and the transporter bridge. In Newport I go to young sitz - I also love all my great friends there. I also hate Newport because of the amount of money wasted.
Chloe from Newport
I love Newport because it is fun here and it is good and it is a nice place here. It is special here because it is pretty here. It has lots of nice shops here. Newport is special to me.
Celine from Newport
I love Newport because it is a fun place to be. I like the parks, the leisure centre and town to shop. I also like the school called St Davids. I like the people there.
Paige George
Things that I love about newport is that all the people there are so friendly and kind. Things I hate about newport is all the crime that's been done and sometimes nothing's being done about because one time a murder was done and the men were only in prison for 3 years!!!!!!
Kendal Desmond from Newport
I love living in Newport, and love the transporter bridge, and the people who live in Newport. The only thing I don't like about Newport is the crime and the vandalism!
Charlotte Burridge
I love Newport because there is a transporter bridge and since there are only 3 in the world that's why I like it. I don't like Newport because of the weather, and there should be more shops like Build a Bear (Bear Factory) and many many more!
Ariel Astrologia
I like Newport because all of the people is so kind and freindly. And I Like Newport because all the teenagers are cool on my street.
Cecelia Solari Beirne
The things I love about Newport are the people and the environment, but we don't always look after our city - we should start.
Sam Hughes from Newport
I love Newport because the transporter bridge is centered here - it's 100 years old and there's only 3 in world! I hate Newport because of the crime here.
Stacy From Newport
I love Newport because there is a lot of new facilities but the buildings are a bit old & dirty & there is a lot of litter. Apart from that Newport is great.
Rea from Newport
I love Newport because it is nice place and a friendly place and they have brilliant youth workers ... but the buildings let the place down a little bit.
Kelsey Dobbs from Newport
I love Newport because it's where i live. Sure it has a load of chavs but it's on it's way up and getting better. Although I think that money shouldn't be wasted on pointless bridges that lead nowhere and should used instead to help improve Newport further.
Rio from Pill
I hate Newport because the people have no ambition. There is no longer a tight knit community anywhere, it is overrun with imagrants especially Pill. The law seems to be intimidated by immigrants and the youth. There is also a serious drug promblem in Newport and not enough help for drug users.
Paul Stokes,ex Newport now London
I love Newport but how it has changed in the 38 years I been away - old Pill where I lived is gone, my old school on Stow Hill, the swimming baths on Stow hill & Sommerton Park are gone. At least the tranny is still there & Rodney Parade. I love to visit Newport but I don't stay long now.
Mike, ex Newport, now Florida
I hate Newport! It is dirty and seedy. The town planners over the years should be shot. Anyone who loves it must never have travelled anywhere else. The shopping is non-existent and the bus depot is disgusting. Enjoy the numerous pubs as you need to be in an alcoholic stupour to endure the city's "delightful" ambience!
Patricia Overholt from Toronto, Canada
I love Newport - its my birthplace. I see a lot of the way of life is still the same. There are a lot of immigrants but some of them can add a lot of culture & beauty to the City. Give them a chance. Don't turn it into a city where people can only go out during the day & let the hooligans have it for the night. Put some entertainment back into the town for all families to share.
Merlin from New Zealand
I love Newport because I no longer live there, I remember the Newport of my youth. It was the first place I worked, had my first proper girlfriend, was served in a pub whilst underage (sorry SWC), where I caught the train to the rest of the world & where I got off the train after discovering the rest of the world. But I agree it's become very shabby in places & a bit worn around the edges. Come on Newport.
Julie from Newport
I hate Newport because of the lack of support services for disabled people. I had heart surgery in June and I'm still waiting for home help.
Rema from Newport
I hate Newport because the roadworks won't be finished for another 10 years & the buses are bad enough already! Stop spending millions on pointless bridges & buildings, start spending it on improving what we have here!
Mark, Newport
I love Newport because it has a great biker scene and great bike clubs.
Pablo Hussan, Bettws
I hate Newport cause it is full of uneducated hoodies that have no respect for the law or society in general. You can't go down the street with out being jumped. Newport is lawless.
Helen fron Newport
I love Newport because most people are friendly and genuine and a pleasure to know. As far as the regeneration though, leave it out. Newport has a dark and subtle beauty, open your eyes - it's there. GLC rule, you knows it clart!
Ceri from Newport
I hate Newport because it's a dangerous place to be it's dirty & unsafe. Gangs of hoodies, ethnic & white youths seem to rule neighbourhoods. It has also become a drop-in centre for immigrants of all races. I myself am not racialist, but I wouldn't want my girls out, especially down Corporation Road, leering men who hang out of the so called "Community Centres". They stand around outside, looking at young girls. I notice a City with attitude and aggression.
Andrew Barnes, Germany
I love Newport because I've been living in Germany for nearly 28 years. I miss the view from Beaufort Road overlooking the St Julians Pub by the side of the River Usk. I miss St Julians Woods where I used to play as a kid. I miss the best fish and chips in the world from down on Church Road. I miss my first love who wrote me a "Dear John" while I was serving in Germany as a young soldier and broke my heart for a life time. I love Newport, dirty or smelly, violent or not - it's where I was born and I am proud to be from Newport.
John from Newport
I hate Newport because it's a bit of a dump - there is nothing to do there. They shouldn't have built over the old canal by the castle to put a road there. When they build everything like the shopping thing it will be trashed by the smelly Chavs! So Eh!
Deb Palmer, Newport
I love Newport because it has so much potential. I love the way the streets are decorated with flowers during summer & the Pandas at the bottom of Malpas Road. It really is a great place to raise your kids, live & work. People make the City - not the other way around.
Leighton Walker, Newport
I hate Newport because it's slowly becoming worse - too many children spoiling the town, getting drunk & wanting to take on the world. Bring back V3, Jesters & some proper dance music. Also I think the doormen are great doing their jobs, but let's be honest with ourselves - are we letting pretty underage girls in on purpose? It's dangerous if you ask me........
Ruth from Newport
I love Newport, It could be worse. It's only when you go to other towns that you really appreciate Newport's quite cool!
Sreeni from India
I love Newport. I had great time there & met my best friends, nice county to live in. City with mixture of old with new breeze of modernism.
Chris Taylor
I love Newport..it's Class mate - don't know what half you people are on about. OK, GLC are more of a gimmick than something to brag about but it's a laugh.
Kate Cooper, Bridgend
I love Newport great atmosphere, lots of different historical & cultural clusters, music shops, an innovative council planning department & is on the up. You will not find anywhere else like it in the world.
Nette from Caerleon
I hate Newport how it ever became a city I'll never know. No good shops. It's dirty, car parks are very expensive that is if you can find anywhere. Lived here 65 years & it's going down hill all the time.
Vicki from Newport
I hate Newport because everyone is so aggressive here & always looking for the next fight. What is with that bridge, Newport is a historic place it does not go with the keeping of the town. What a waste of money.
Pete from Newport
I hate Newport because it is the land that time forgot. The people are so narrow minded it is unbelievable.
Fardeen Khan from Newport
I hate Newport because it is a dead end place with no future & no decent jobs.
Elizabeth from Newport
I love Newport a great night life, fab people, the best Chinese that I have found (Super Wok) and loads of nice pubs to drink and relax in.
Daniel Johnston from Tyne and Wear
I love Newport - you've got Maskells roller disco, John Frost Square and the GLC.
Jack Edwards, Newport
I love Newport it is a warm loving & friendly place to live. The past 20 years terrific improvements have been made, it is a first class CITY now, not a town.
Lee from Newport
I love Newport it has been the despised underdog for far too long. Let's fly the black and amber flag high and proud but let's not stand for any nonsense!
Rolando Tippadando
I hate Newport it has been turned into a detention centre for immigrants. What a great investment the silly red wave was, over a million of our tax money was wasted on that.
Lisa from Newport
I love Newport there are some really lovely views and beauty spots in Newport and surrounding areas.
Heather Symonds, Somerton, Newport
I love Newport, it's got the best of both worlds. It has wonderful old buildings and a fantastic history but at the same time it is becoming a wonderful modern city.
Emma
I hate Newport because I do not feel as though this city looks after its own ... stop building pointless bridges, save the money.
Anthony from Newport
I love Newport because it's Unique. Because it's diverse. And because it's Newport.
Aftab from Newport
I love Newport because it is much better than where my early childhood years were spent (Luton). Also I wouldn't have met my beautiful wife Tabassum who is from Newport!!
Graham from Newport
I hate Newport, it has transformed from Wales' largest town into Wales' worst city. I've waited for 50 years, and Newport is still not completed.
Pam from Newport
I hate Newport I'm sad to say it has become very alien to me now and I feel no connection, so I've made the decision to move out.
Marie from Newport
I love Newport the new city centre regeneration is so exciting, and the foot bridge is great. And we won Wales in Bloom again!
Mashton, Notts
I love Newport because...it is a typical dead-end market town with the same down to earth attitude. Dark but lush at the same time, definitely a Marmite town.
Ellie, London
I love Newport because...I am Newport born and bred. I have lived in London just over a year and still get excited when I see that Casnewydd sign! I wouldn't bring my children up there though.
Tal from Bethesda Cross the Pond
I love Newport though I only know of it from these comments! But it is now on my list of places to go when I visit Wales, hopefully this fall. Cheers!
Ben from Caerleon
I love Newport because...it's who I am and where I'm from, but it urgently needs regeneration and a better reputation - rather than just being rundown like it is now.
Allan Cornhill from Newport
I love Newport I am South African, I moved back to SA for a year but couldn't wait to get back. Newports getting better and it's all you lovely Welsh peoples' fault that I am back!!
Duncan, on top of Stow Hill, Newport
I love Newport because...the people are friendlier and there are far fewer drunks/junkies/glue sniffers hanging around the railway station than in Cardiff. The regeneration of the city is very exciting and the future looks bright.
Stuart Welton, Cardiff
I love Newport - the people, the buildings, the river, the history and most of all Twm Barlwm.
Donna Webb
I love Newport its were I grew up. I could never leave here. As for some saying the people are nasty they aint got a clue what they're on about. People here are lovely. What you get is what you see straight and down to earth and very welcoming.
Jackie, Newport
I love Newport because it is my home, and I love my neighbours. We all get on wherever we originally come from.
Lee White, Newport

KW Wu from Kluang, Johor, Malaysia
I loved Newport when I studied there between 1978/79. I met my best mate Tony Chilcott and we had some memorable times together. Also the fish
and chips shop at the bus station which I
craved.
Dawn Smith in Blackwood
I hate newport because the people are rude and full of themselves. It's bad enough that I have to work there.
Matt Collins in Cardiff
I hate Newport because the people are small-minded and the place is depressing on the best of days. I grew up there and couldnt wait to leave.
David Evans from Risca
I hate Newport because they have such array of car parks built by the Victorians, Edwardians and others which used to be called pavements.
Colin from Raglan
I hate Newport because of all the traffic lights. I avoid it as much as possible.
Alex Marsh, Pontypool
I Hate Newport the clubs are bunk since V3 shut down and I don't go there anymore for a night out. The quicker they regenerate Newport the better.
Gethin Luke from Abergavenny

Paul from Chepstow
I love Newps - its got the best Greggs for miles and they serve wicked chips in the local chippie in Pill. The people are fantastic - salt of the earth.
Sharon Challingsworth, Massachusetts, USA

Gareth from the valleys
I hate Newport because of the traffic lights, especially the ones by the Royal Gwent Hospital. Put the roundabout back.
Kerry McMullen from Cwmbran
I love Newport because it is quite diverse and it has an excellent music scene. It's going to get better with all the development that's going on at the moment.

Sandra Hodge from Newport
I love Newport because it has all the attributes of a small town but all the pleasures of a city.
Geoff Nicolle from Pembrokeshire
I loved Newport as a child brought up in Caerleon. It meant Somerton Park. I can still remember the County team for the first match I saw there.
Anderson
I love Newport, I think the buildings need re doing because it makes the city look really scruffy but apart from that, it's great loving it.
Rhianne Lewis from Newport

Tom from Caerphilly
I hate Newport because Goldie Lookin Chain are from there.
Gareth Hale from Newport
I love Newport because of the people's caustic wit. They never fail to make a joke even when it may not be quite appropriate. Underneath I think most Clarts are warm and caring.
