"1893, Grade II listed by Haberishon & Fawckner, a London firm with a Newport office who were responible for the Market Arcade also, as well as other commerical buildings in the town. This is the view of the arcade from the BBC's community studio which is based here in Newport's best arcade. The arcade is a typical British building type and Cardiff probably has the best UK examples apart from Leeds. North Americans would classify this architecture as 'a mall'. So the type is still being used as a desireable way of shopping - a pedistrianised street with a glass roof to let in daylight and yet keep out the rain - a practical solution to the problems of Welsh weather."
