"Ann Gatehouse, the Chairman of the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge - www.fontb.org.uk - while collecting my membership told me about the many people who love the bridge and work to support activities concerned with it. Next year is its centenary. Hayley Mills will be attending a special showing of the film Tiger Bay. As a young girl she was filmed on this bridge (for the sake of the story transported to Cardiff, but who cares about authenticity when there's a good picture opportunity). John Pritchard and I crossed over the top boom of the bridge - an opportunity for anyone on Open Days. It was my first time and I've always wanted to do this, but I found it slighty unnerving. John meantime was counting the number of steps in the spiral staircases on both sides while I watched the movable gondala suspended from the boom making its sedate and wonderful journey across the river. He tells me that there are 277 steps one side and 278 the other - no high tech space age technology here!"
