"Called Unity Prudence and Energy, this group of figures represents the motto of the Chartists Union. A brave council commissioned this large scale piece to recognise the spirit behind this radical movement on the very site of the famous confrontation. On a shopping day, familes intermingle with the sculptures and seem to engage in a surreal way with their historic past. Nearby is a Grade II listed structure, a George VI letterbox and elsewhere in Newport an electric transformer has also been listed. David McLees, of Cadw, told me that more people write to the authority about the listing of telephone boxes than do about individual architectural structures."
