"Built in 1889 by Conyers Kirby and TE Watkins. Grade II. Pevsner describes Watkins, the architect of this building as obscure and, yes, it's hard to find anything else by this man. However in his collaboration with the town surveyor Kirby he has produced a stunning, confident design, massive in scale its sweeping steep roof and tower are worthy of one of the great Flemish Cloth Halls. Only Abergavenny's Town Hall and Market comes anywhere near it as an example of this style of architecture in Wales. There are some small signs of neglect in the upper storeys but its good to see this builidng still in good nick and satisfying its original purpose."
