Top Shelf Jazz

Last updated: 19 January 2007

Top Shelf Jazz

  • Artist / Band: Top Shelf Jazz
  • From: Cardiff
  • Style / influences:
Singing mainly jazz/swing from the 1930s era but the occasional blues and crooning ballad too. influences range from Al Bowlly, heavy drinking, Billie Holiday, the odd stormy love affair, Marlene Dietrich, The Ink Spots, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Zen Hussies and importantly, the chaotic nonsense of the Bonzo Dog Band....
  • Who's in the band?
Arthur Foxaque (Fred Snow) - Vocals, Suave, Rhythm Guitar & Banter
Jack the Finger - Contra Bassine & Shouting
Smokey Green - Drums, Rolling Tobacco & Record Production
Harry the Horn - Trumpet & Dribbling
With special guest: Lula Shaker - Tap Dance & Liquor
  • Been going since: Vaguely at the end of 2003, current lineup from September 2006
  • Where they play:
Everywhere? We're not gods! Mainly round Cardiff: Callaghans, Old Howardians, Cafe Floyd, Glo bar, Buffalo's, Salt bar, and other live venues that escape me right now. Oh yes! Minski's when we are house band for "What the Butler Saw" burlesque: very swish!
  • Favourite local venue: You'll find me drinking in more upmarket bars these days
  • Songs they cover: See style and influences. Fats Waller is really tickling me at the moment
  • Recordings available:
No official release as yet. Working on an album. bit like saying "there's a cheque in the post"...
  • Best moment so far: Meeting the tireless Lula Shaker in the Edinburgh fringe festival
  • Future plans: We're attempting to ship ourselves out to Australia til early May. And upon our return, hit the ground running: speakeasy is the next big thing, chaps!
  • Favourite other local bands: Oh! must I?
  • Anything else we should know? Have a look at our website for all the guff and ridiculous stories!
