Bard of Ely

Steve Andrews - the Bard of Ely

  • Artist / Band: Bard of Ely a.k.a. Steve Andrews
  • From: Cardiff
  • Style / influences: Eclectic singer/songwriter. My main influences are Neil Young, Dylan, John Lennon, Leonard Cohen and other great singer/songwriters.
  • Been going since: years ago
  • Where he plays: All sorts of places but I like festivals best and I was a compere and performer at Glastonbury 2003 and at the Green Man Festival.
  • Favorite local venue: Clwb Ifor Bach and Barfly
  • Songs he covers: 'Stand By Me' by Ben E. King & John Lennon, 'Rockin' in the Free World' by Neil Young (and several others of his songs), 'Working Class Hero' by John Lennon, 'Love You' by Syd Barrett and 'What's Going On?' by 4 Non Blondes, amongst many more!
  • Recordings available: 'Meltdown the Album' & 'Take it to the Bridge Vol 3' are 2 Various Artist compilations I have had tracks on, but also an EP on Pink Lemon Records from Germany, called 'Mask' as well as countless online releases on OMDs. Also, I front TAFFIA and we have an EP release on Crai Records with 2 of my songs 'You're a Liar, Nicky Wire' and 'Harvest Home'.
  • Best moment so far: Glastonbury 1998 when despite the awful weather I got an encore for my set.
  • Future plans:
Play as many festivals as I can, do as much recording as I can, get as much exposure as possible and just keep at it!
  • Favourite other local bands: Doofer, It's Jo and Danny, Wendykurk, Amy Wadge, The Mountaineers, Transposer.
  • Anything else we should know?: I was the compere for the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury 2002 and 2003. And I forgot to tell you I have a track on the Green Man Festival CD released by It's Jo and Danny on Double Snazzy. I'm also featured on a benefit CD for Dixie, an amazing artist, poet, friend, mother, potter and wife. She suffers from Autoimmune Hepatitis and needs a liver transplant. I also have a song on the Bands United Project double CD of International bands & we believe that at just over 90 minutes for CD2, it is the longest running CD compilation in the world.
