Kate Scott-Williams samples A Taste of Merthyr for BBC Radio Wales
'A Taste of Merthyr' aims to challenge the stereotypical view of Merthyr Tydfil as a place where people are not interested in healthy living or good food. It involves residents in re-creating dishes that they eat at home and in sharing their recipes with others. The outcome will be photographic exhibition work and a recipe book.
It highlights the diverse range of nationalities living in Merthyr Tydfil today as included in the book are recipes from Wales, Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Poland and the Dominican Republic.
It is part of the Glamorgan GATES project which is a partnership between the University of Glamorgan and Communities First. It aims to develop imaginative and innovative methods of lifelong learning through activities and events.
The GATES project is based in the High Street in Merthyr. An ongoing exhibition of the work produced for A Taste of Merthyr is on show in the GATES shop and participants get together throughout the year to celebrate the ongoing work and share food and recipes.
