"Stephen Owen 'Siegfried' Davies - known as S.O.
He began work as a coal miner at the age of 12, studying
for a degree in his spare time. He became the Vice President
of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain and was MP for
Merthyr Tydfil from 1934-72. When the photograph was
taken he was 84 and had just been deselected by the
Constituency Labour Party who thought he was too old to
stand for re-election in 1970. He decided to stand as an Independent. I photographed him being mobbed by his
supporters outside the town hall. He won the election."
