Howard Winstone

Howard Winstone

Last updated: 03 December 2005

David Ambery went to the Royal Albert Hall in London to see the Welsh Wizard's world title fight against Mitsunori Seki in 1968.

"I was with my father-in-law, George Moody - the Moodys were a well-known Pontypridd boxing family, and we often went to boxing matches together.

"We went to London the day before the fight and saw the weigh-in. It was very exciting. On the night, we were sitting in the third row, a few seats away from Terry Downes, another boxing world champion.

"This has to be one of the greatest Welsh sporting moments - it was a great fight and Winstone really deserved to win.

"There were celebrations afterwards, as you can imagine..."

Hi - I'm also looking for footage of Howard Winstone fights for my dad's birthday. The only place I can find them is on YouTube, but downloading them in bits and pieces will have constant jumping throughout. If anyone knows if I can get it already on DVD, please let me know. Thanks.

Martin Evans, London
Yes, I was at the Albert Hall also on 23/1/1968 having come up to London from school about 72 miles away. I wrote a brief article for our school magazine. A great night and I had the privilege of speaking to Howard on the phone a year or two before he died and buying an autographed copy of his book. A great sportsman, sadly missed.

I remember in the late sixties when Howard came home with the world title, I was in school at the time and Wayne and Roy (Howard's sons) were in the same school. Wayne was in my class, it was exciting times for Cefn Coed near Merthyr Tydfil to have such a big star living in your village, and Howard was one of if not the best boxer Wales has ever produced. The streets of Cefn Coed were filled with Welsh flags and bunting and hundreds of people for the great little boxer's return.

Here's an interesting little website for lovers of Welsh boxing history - www.johnnyowen.com/howard_winstone.html

No - Howard Winstone never had any fights with a guy named Jimmy Koal (coal).

David Howland, Bridgend
I met a chap called Jimmy Koal(?) from London who said he had two fights with Howard Winstone that went the distance. Is this true? Please help.

Rudy Calderon, Reno, Nevada
Great boxer, great British world champion. I was a kid when I watched those fights with Vicente Saldivar.

James Evans from Norwich
My dad's name is Mansell Winstone Evans, his mother's name was Sarah Anne Winstone and he told me that Howard Winstone is his second cousin on his mother's side, so I was wondering if this can be verified please.

Gareth Winstone from Yorkshire
I'm looking for any footage of Howard Winstone fighting. Can anyone help me? Cheers.
