Not a lot to actually see these days but the common has remnants of pre-history Bronze age habitation (Darren (Deri) valley area):
A megalithic burial mound at Carn Bugail (Merthyr end of the common)the Cefn Gelligaer StoneCapel Gwladys remants - St Gwladys was the mother of Tydfil the Martyr (Merthyr Tydfil to us!).The village has:
an old coaching inn, the Cross Inn, as you enter the village from Trelewistwo (yes, two) Roman fortresses on the left after entering the villagea Celtic hill fort (behind the post office and to your left if you are going down the hill to Glyn Gaer)the beautiful St Cattwg's Norman Church (with the old stocks) that has many interesting headstones in the grave yard.At the top of Top Hill (as you come from Trelewis) is an Elizabethan farmhouse and at the bottom of the hill as you approach Trelewis, is a beautiful Elizabethan Manor House that is open to the public.
Take the road down to Ystrad Mynach and half way down the hill on the right side you will see a Jacobean farm house which was once occupied by the reverend gentleman who first translated the Bible into Welsh - much of this work was done at that house.
All this in one small area - worth reading up on and going to see for history buffs.
