Colin Baker talks to Nicola Heywood Thomas
on BBC Radio Wales (Need help with RealPlayer?)
Baker, who played the Doctor from 1984 to 1986, was visiting BBC Wales HQ in May 2005 to promote his appearance as Van Helsing in a stage play about Dracula.
When he arrived at Broadcasting House, he was surprised to see the Tardis in reception - and how big it was.
See Colin Baker reunited with the Tardis"I don't know if it's the Welsh air," he told BBC Radio Wales presenter Nicola Heywood Thomas, "but it's a good two feet taller than mine!"
Baker (pictured below as the Doctor) added that he was delighted to see the series return to our screens.
"It's a tribute to Russell T Davies, the man who really fought to bring it back. We were all a little anxious, excited and apprehensive - and he's exceeded any expectations anyone might have had.
"He hasn't pandered to the fans, which might have been fatal."
Another welcome spin-off for Baker was that his children finally became interested in his work on the cult TV show.
"None of my daughters (aged 20 to 13) saw Doctor Who.
"All the tapes are on the shelf and every now and then I've said 'are you interested in seeing one? 'Oh, no, pur-leeze, Dad...
"Then they watch the new one and ask, 'was that what you were in?', and they've started watching them.
"And the accolade of all accolades - 'oh, you're not bad - almost as good as Christopher Eccleston!"
