Listen to Christine (Need help?)

There's never a dull moment because of the phone boxes across the road. They're the only ones on the estate and they're a famous meeting place for everybody, so you definitely see life around here.

Day by day you hear people going in. Of course living across the road from them I can hear them when the girlfriends are screaming at boyfriends - "where were you to pick up the kids? You didn't come and see them yesterday..."

You can hear these conversations going on because people are in those phone boxes screaming. It just makes you sit down and giggle some days with some of the things you hear going on. They're no trouble - it's all good fun at the end of the day.

Phone box on Heol Maes Eirwg, St MellonsA lot of people won't use the phone boxes - like the elderly - because they're intimidated by the kids. We say to the kids "move away when you see the elderly coming and let them use the phones". They say "we do, but they get frightened of us and we don't know why".

We've just started a youth group. Funnily enough we asked them what they would like to see in St Mellons, cos at the end of the day these children are our future tenants. It was strange to find that they're complaining about the same things as us.

The one thing we would love in this area that we cannot have - we've been told that we'll never ever get it no matter how hard we fight and we try - we would love our own leisure centre with a swimming pool where there are facilities. We can take 'em to play badminton, football and all the rest of it. We can do lots of activities with them.

You put our lot over Eastern Leisure Centre in Llanrumney, and you're mixing with the Llanrumney children. They find out they're from St Mellons and basically you have a problem, cos there's battles going on with this one, and battles going on with that - you know what kids are like.

I love St Mellons. I don't really want to move from here. I want to go back to the olden days where your community was your community and you're all friends together. In a neighbourhood you're supposed to stick together and help one another. You shouldn't be at one another's throats, which is unfortunately what happens on a lot of big estates.

This is going to be a better place to live. It's got very bad press over the last couple of years. We have a new committee now and hopefully things are going to improve up here, and it'll be the place everybody wants to live.

I've lived in St Mellons all my life and hate it when people bad mouth it. I've never had any trouble - I love it here!!

Who needs soap operas when there's St Mellons?

I agree with Christine that there is too much petty arguing among teenagers over what area you come from. What does it matter if you come from Llanrumney or St Mellons? At the end of the day we all come from Wales - we all come from Cardiff!

I have lived here 7 years since I was 10, at first I was intimidated by the gangs who hang around at the phoneboxes but quickly made friends and they are really nice boys and girls who are easy to get on with, they will only have trouble with you if you start with them. We are slowly getting more facilities and things to do so hopefully the crime and trouble will be cut dramatically.
