Listen to Sandi (Need help with RealPlayer?)I've lived here for nineteen years. My husband and I actually walked through the so-called Ely riots years and years ago, and they weren't all they were cracked up to be.
We walked up the top of Wilson Road and there was someone throwing slates down. We shouldn't have walked through, but after an alcohol-fuelled evening that's what we decided to do to be nosy.
It wasn't that bad. They'd made out it was a massive rush of people and all sorts, but it wasn't half as bad. I mean, we walked through it unscathed and we're still here to tell the tale all these years later.
Anything good in Ely we get a little tiny page, maybe an inch square in the Echo. Anything bad and it's front page. It goes back to the riots and it's a case of mud sticks.
Bad press sells more papers probably. Anything remotely gossipy will sell more than if a person does something that's really worthwhile.
The only way I think I would move out of here is if I won the lottery and then I'd move to Grand Canaria. If I'm gonna stay in Cardiff, I'm definitely gonna live here. This street is very quiet.
You get good or bad wherever you go - doesn't matter whether it's Ely or Rhiwbina. I think it's time Ely gets put on the map for the right reason.
