Listen to Gerald (Need help with RealPlayer?)I've lived here for thirty three years. When I got married, my wife was from over this side of Ely, I was from the over the other side. When we came here, it was a very quiet street and all the neighbours looked after one another.
It's very rare we get problems in this street. If the alarm goes off, the neighbours come and check to see if the house is alright, same as we do with anybody else in the street.
At the moment, we are the oldest residents in this street left. When we come here it was mostly old people. Course they've gone on now and younger people are coming in.
When the older people were here we used to have street parties and street outings. We went to Aberafan and Butlins.
We had a big marquee put out the front on Millennium year. We organised all that and we had a good night. All that has gone, 'cos my wife used to organise it. Left to the younger ones, they don't do it now.
I've lived in Ely all my life, and you get the same problems no matter where you live. At the moment there's nowhere for young children to go. When I was a teenager there were six different places in Ely you could go to. Now there's nowhere for them to go, but to hang around the corners of streets.
I wouldn't move out of the street, unless I won the lottery of course - then you can buy whatever you like, but at the moment I think this is one of the best streets in Ely.
