Blaengarw Community Orchard
Last updated: 26 November 2008
Blaengarw Primary School will be among the volunteers helping Creation Development Trust to celebrate The Tree Council's National Tree Week (26th November to 7th December) by transforming Blaengarw Community Orchard.
Backed by a grant from environment charity The Tree Council, the lead UK tree campaigning partnership, they will be planting native trees, bushes, shrubs and bulbs to create a complete eco system. Each class from the primary school will be planting one layer during the week.
Blaengarw Community Orchard was established by Creation Development Trust in February 2008. Timecentre volunteers helped plant 104 apple trees, an equal mix of Cooker, Eater, and Cider varieties. As part of National Tree Planting Week Blaengarw Primary School are helping to plant a further 140 trees along with bushes, shrubs and bulbs to create a forest garden with its own Eco system.
This is part of the "Gardd Garw" initiative where Timecentre members recieve time credits for helping to nurture and maintain the upper Garw Valley. One hour's voluntary work earns one time credit which can then be spent on a variety of community based activities. The Timecentre is a community currency scheme which rewards active citizenship.
