An Interview With Ant

Ant Dennis from Aberdare - photo by John White

Anthony Dennis is one of the original skateboarders of the Aberdare scene. Here's what he had to say in a quick chat with N3B..."

How long have you been skating?

I started in 1988, after seeing skateboarding on the Television Programme 'BMX Beat'. They had a guy called Shane Rouse do a freestyle skating demonstration in between the BMX contest runs. Bought my first board that Christmas (Well, Mum did). So that's 14 and a half years I've been involved in skating, with a break of about 6 years in between (1992 - 1998) for BMX purposes. :-)

Where is your favourite place to skate in the UK?

That would have to be Bristol. From 1989 - 1991 we used to spend every Saturday in Bristol. There were 3 skateparks there BACK THEN. Bedminster (Or Dame Emily's as it's called now) and St Georges were my favourites. Bristol people (Bristolians) were always mellow towards skaters, which was quite unusual at the time. Today, there are over 7 parks, good shops, and one of the best street spots in the country (Lloyds).

Wot do you recon are the best trucks for your type of skating and why?

Personally, I'd say Venture Trucks. Venture have been around for-ever, so you know they are excellent quality. Whenever someone asks me what trucks they should get, I always say either Venture, Independent or Gullwing, purely because they are original truck companies and know exactly what's up with skating. The rubber on Venture trucks is very responsive, so the board turns exactly when you want it to, very handy when you are skating through a crowded street....

Wot do you think of facilities in the UK for skaters?

Seriously, you guys have got it sooo good right now. Never have I known this country to have so many skateparks. At the moment, if you are willing to travel, this country has it all. Maybe, just maybe, we could also have a nice variation of quality facilities within Rhondda Cynon Taff....

Where do you think is the best skate venue outside the UK for u?

Everyone is saying Barcelona at the moment. The city is like one huge street plaza skatepark. I haven't been myself, but have seen enough footage and photos to see where they are coming from. For skateparks and general good times in skating, it would have to be Austrailia. How would you fancy a superb concrete skatepark on basically every street corner.....?
