Medallion Man

Terrence Burchill

Terrence Burchill

Listen to Terrence(Need help?)

I'm a keen collector of medals from the Boer war, and I'm not boasting when I say I've got the best collection of Boer War medals for the battle of Elandslaagte in the world.

I spend quite of bit of money every year sending from catalogues from the big auction houses. I get lists of dealers and if they've got anything that might interest me, they phone up and let me know.

Trouble is I'm always skint. Everybody thinks I'm a rich man, but somebody always seems to find something for me to buy when I get some coins together.

Boer War medal Here's one I had yesterday from City Coins in South Africa. This is for a Boer in the Johannesburg Commando. Now, commandos were started in the Boer War on the Boer side. Our commandos were just a copy of those.

But he was a 21 year old chappy, a farmer. He went fighting against the British and got captured on 21 October 1899. He got kept a prisoner of war until 1902. I've got all the paper work with it.

When I get a medal like this, it talks to me. I feel something for it - it puts me back.

I am looking for my great-grandfather's medals from the second Boer War. He received the Queen's South Africa Medal with the Cape Colony bar and possibly a couple of others. His name was William J. Austen and he was with the Royal Engineers. Have you, by any chance, seen it?

Amanda Wigginton of Nottingham
I am writing this hoping you may be able to help me? 11 years ago my grandfather passed away and left me two medals from the Boer War, dated 1901-1902. From what I can remember my grandfather said the medals were given to him when his grandfather passed away in the early 1920s. I'd love to know where I could find out any possible info on the man who won these medals. I have his regiment and his number but I have no idea where I go from here as we don't know any info on the man who was given these medals. My e-mail address is peterwigginton@btinternet.com. Any information or help would be appreciated.
