Accessible Aberdare

Richard

Richard

Listen to Richard(Need help?)

I'm 24 years of age. I was born in Aberdare, and have lived here all my life.

I went to school in Blaengwawr, where I was the first person with a physical disability to attend the school.

I've had a disability all my life. I was born with brittle bones, which means I'm a wheelchair user.

I set Accessible Aberdare up because I wanted to help make other disabled people in Aberdare aware of what was on offer for them, and help companies in Aberdare become accessible.

Initially when I started in 2002, our biggest aim was to remove the cobbles in Aberdare. The cobbles in Market Street and in Canon Street were posing a threat to people with disabilities, elderly people, and people who had pushchairs, prams, high heels etc.

Nothing really has improved since then. There are some shops which have had ramps fitted, which the disabled community of Aberdare are obviously very appreciative of.

It's a slow process and making people aware of what's needed and what's required is going to take time.
