Listen to Julia(Need help?)
I'm a detached youth worker for the local authority of RCT. I work with a wide range of young people. My remit is 11-25 with priority to 14-19 year olds.
It could be a young person bored on the street wanting to take up some social activities. We've been involved with kayaking, climbing. We can offer a range of things - the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
It could be somebody who needs advice regarding benefits. Someone's who's homeless, so we'll support them in finding emergency accommodation and following it through.
We also accept referrals from social services, so there's a wide range of issues and needs depending on the young person.
There was this one lad I met. He was nineteen at the time from an area which is not classed as a particularly affluent area. When I met him he was spending 24/7 drinking and using class A drugs.
Through our support we were able to identify his needs. We sent him on a range of courses which helped develop his self esteem.
He was actually living in a squalid environment and wasn't very close to his parents. He's now moved back to living with his parents and is self employed.

Aberdare has got a lot of problems, drugs are a huge problem. The council estates are awash with class As, the town centre on the weekend are full of your so called recreational drugs - speed, Es, Coke, and other mind bending substances. How I know? I've been there and I'm the lucky one - I kicked it. But a lot of my friends weren't so lucky - they paid with their lives. Good luck to Julia, I'm sure she will do a great job, good luck.
