This sprawling fortress covers thirty acres of land making it the largest in Wales and, along with Windsor and Dover, one of the largest in Britain. It was built in the late 13th century by the Anglo-Norman lord Gilbert de Clare to consolidate his grip on the lands he captured.
The view here is taken from the parkland at its rear. The front of the castle is surrounded by Caerphilly's busy shopping centre.
