Sarah Thomas

Sarah Thomas Olympic hockey player

Born:
13 JAN 1981
Place of Birth:
Merthyr Tydfil
School:
Vaynor and Penderyn School
Famous For:
Olympic hockey player
Biography:

Sarah has been playing field hockey since the age of 12 and played for Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Her father Phil tells us more...

Sarah has played for Wales at all levels from under 16 to senior level, and was selected for the Great Britain squad for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

After studying for a degree in Sports Science at Exeter University, Sarah left her friends and family, to go and play hockey in Rotterdam.

The Dutch play at a much higher level than in this country, and last season she was rewarded with player of the year.

As well as her club commitments in Holland, Sarah has been training with the GB squad at Bisham Abbey.

This has been a difficult time for Sarah, as she is trying to do all this without a main sponsor.

I admire Sarah because of her dedication, her courage in leaving all her friends and family, going to a strange country where you know no one, can't speak the language, and doing it alone, with just one goal, an Olympic medal.

And the main reason I admire her is because I'm her Dad.

Sarah was delighted to be selected for the Olympic squad: "I'm over the moon. I don't think it's actually sunk in yet but it's going to be absolutely fantastic."

PS Great Britain's hockey teams didn't win medals in Beijing, but Sarah was admired for showing some flair amid her team's predictable game plan.

Fantastic, what a wonderful story. There are so many negative news items accredited to Merthyr Tydfil, let us give credit and some publicity to the wonderful, dedicated youth and their supportive parents who live in Merthyr and the surrounding area. Good luck with your training Sarah at the Olympic camp, hope you achieve your goal of Beijing 2008.

One of the best hockey players Wales has ever produced. Sarah plays an amateur sport with a truly professional approach. Hockey is a sport where athletes, even those playing at the highest level, have to dig deep into their own and family's resources to fund their ambitions. No one deserves success more than Sarah whose dedication to her sport is second to none. Best of luck for the games at Bisham on the weekend.

    Anita and Dave Roberts Wrexham
Parents of Katie Roberts, ex-Welsh International but still follow the Welsh squad having made lots of friends through Welsh hockey, especially Phil and Sheila. Sarah, we couldn't be more proud of you - you at last are realising your ambition. We wish you all you wish for youself and more. Good luck and what a lovely mum and dad you have.
