Robert Earnshaw

Robert Earnshaw Record-breaking super striker

Born:
06 APR 1981
Place of Birth:
Zambia
Famous For:
Record-breaking super striker
Trivia:
Earnshaw gets his soccer talent from both his parents - his mother Rita was also a boxer in her native Zambia.
Biography:
One of the brightest young talents helping restore Wales's reputation in the soccer world, Earnie was sold by Cardiff City to West Brom for £3m - a record transfer fee paid to a Welsh club.

He was eight years old when his family left Africa to settle in Caerphilly, although his father died shortly before they emigrated.

Earnshaw's sporting talent soon attracted the attentions of Cardiff City, who signed him as a YTS trainee aged 16.

He came through the club's youth development programme and became a full-time professional in August 1998, despite the attentions of his heroes Manchester United.

The Zambian Prince made his mark immediately with a superb equaliser at Hartlepool on the opening day of the season.

However, loan spells at Middlesbrough and Greenock Morton suggested his prospects at Ninian Park weren't entirely rosy.

But the experience gave Earnshaw the motivation to succeed and on his return he soon became one of the Bluebird fans' biggest heroes.

He'd already been capped by Wales at youth and under-21 level, but his exploits in Cardiff City's promotion campaigns attracted the attention of national coach Mark Hughes.

Earnshaw duly exploded onto the international scene, scoring the winning goal on his debut for Wales against Germany at the Millennium Stadium in May 2002.

He was named man of the match and a few months later was named Young Welsh Footballer of the Year.

Since then Earnshaw has become a key member of the Wales squad, staking his claim for a regular slot in the starting line-up with a hat-trick in the 4-0 friendly win over Scotland in February 2004.

Several top clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Celtic sent their scouts to check Earnie out as his reputation spread.

But it was West Brom who swooped to sign the striker in August 2004 and offer him the chance to play in the Premiership.

Earnie was unable to secure a first team place and a transfer to Norwich City sent him back to the Championship.

However, he booked his return to the top flight in summer 2007 by signing for newly-promoted Derby County.

Moment of Glory:
Scoring the winning goal for Wales against Germany on his international debut
Off the Record:
Bluebirds boss Lennie Lawrence had kittens after seeing Earnie risk injury with a somersault after scoring for Wales against Bosnia.

your comments

Neil from cardiff
Earnie you gotta get back down here and get us blubirds into the promised land. Top guy. I wish you all the luck!

Ali,England
Mufulira is also the birthplace of Dafydd James - winger for Wales RFC. (Johnny Wilkinson's mum also used to live in Mufulira and apparently Austin Healey's mum lived in the next village!). Two other famous Zambian-born rugby players: Corne Krige (Springbok captain) and George Gregan (Australia captain).

Rebecca form cardiff
Hi i just want to know how many people have actually met Robert Earnshaw in person

Mirco Cordeiro from Caerphilly
I would like thank Robert for finding time to deliver the prizes of the 1st BME Football Tournament in Caerphilly on Sunday 3rd June 2007. His presence made the all experience unforgettable for all the participants and highlighted the contribution of our cultural diversity to Wales. On behalf of all the young people, thank you.

Chris S, Norwich
Met you twice Earnie, and what a great guy and professional you are. Keep banging in the goals for us OTBC

Joseph Chileshe, London
Hey Earnie, keep it going bruv - hope to see you back in the Premiership. Continue scoring and continue smiling! PS You have a far better chance of featuring in the world cup if you represent Zambia, as the flame of the dragon has been doused ... food for thought.

Nat Smith - Suffolk
Welcome back Earnie ... you're a Tru Legend!!Such AN Amazin Playa..xx

LT from Brum
An ode to Earnie

Oh wee man you are so ace
In our hearts you have won a place
Like a little David you came and slane
The so called Goliaths of the footy game
You score more times than a young Tom Jones
The Welsh we love you down to your little bones
Small in size but big in charisma
Where ever you go the fans they love ya
I used to think my favorite Rob was De Niro
But now it is you who is my hero.

Wozy from Cardiff
earnie aka the bandit, aka the zambian prince, i can still hear the chant from the pot noddle advert, earnie's guna get you we sang, and nine times out of ten he did, i'd go so far as to say he was the only man i ever loved.

Sainty (Cardiff City fan)
I'm a big Earnie fan. I named my son Dylan Earnshaw Thomas. You deserve to be in the Prem my son - too good for the championship. You done yourself proud at Cardiff - you will put the blue shirt of Cardiff on again.

Abigail Chisenga
I am a Zambian journalist and I would love to write a story about him and how he feels about Zambia.

Peter Dace, Worksop
Where on earth would Norwich be now if Ernie wasn't scoring - a relegation struggler??

Jak Shannons from Swansea
Earnshaw is my all time favourite football playa i hope to be like him when i grow up. HE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!

Herbie, Pontypool
Congratulations Ernie, you done it on Saturday (11/11/06) against West Brom - pity Robson wasn't there. Good luck for the future, keep getting them in the net.

Becca Stent, Lowestoft
Earnie is the best - I love him. Keep scoring for Norwich and keep at Norwich - everybody loves him.

Liam Bowen from Lowestoft
I love him - Norwich wouldn't have managed without him. He's the best player in the championship. I can do a somersault like him but he's a better player than me. I love you Earnie - I am going to have Earnie on my back.

Herbie, New Inn
You will soon be playing against WBA. Make sure you score the winning goal for Norwich as I know you will, and on your way off the pitch give Robson the two finger V sign. He didn't know talent when he saw it. His loss Norwich's gain. Good luck for the future.

Sarah Haydn
I just love Robert Earnshaw as he is going to get Norwich City up once more. So good then, Dean Ashton - West Ham are going down with Dean Ashton and Norwich are going up with Robert Earnshaw. Come on, Robert Earnshaw.

ali pee, cannock
Earnshaw I am so sad that you have gone because you were class. Robson dont know what he is doing. ome on you baggies!!!!!!

Herbert Williams
Good goalscorer during his time with Cardiff. Good goalscorer for Wales. Enjoys his football and is doing alright for his present club Norwich. Clean player, never seems to get in any trouble on or off the field. West Brom missed their chance by not letting play enough - now relegated, their own fault.

Shaun Lawthom, Ystrad, Rhondda
Earnie should never have left the Bluebirds - he was a legend there. Now he's at Norwich he's back in the division he didn't want to be in. Hopefully one day he will wear the Cardiff colours again.

Diane from West Brom
earnie is my all time fav. i was really gutted wen he went. i always asked him 4 a hug b4 matches coz i thought he was so adorable. I'm his #1 fan. miss ya loads earnie, we should av kept u. i don't no wot bryan robson was thinkin. love u always

Deanna Potter from Milford Haven
he is the best player for them. i went to see him playing wales vs scotland and he scored 3 goals. i am his biggst fan.

Eddie Powell, Norfolk
All the best when you play for Norwich. You will get a good reception from the management and fans. Score goals!

jon, south wales
Whatever Pablo, Earnies goals saved west brom last season he deserves his chances. Robson just preferred other strikers and if he didnt need him then why keep him?? Theres no point in saying 'pretend Welsh' every country has other nationalities playing for them. You can just look on and envy him.To be fair, why even comment??

alice singogo houston ,texas usa
hey it is so nice to learn there is a zambian out there doing us pride.. hey any thoughts to play for zambia?

sean norwich
good signing for norwich

pablo derbo, barcelona
This man is dillusional. he is a third rate footballer with a pedantic attitude to the game. He should be grateful that West Bromwcih gave him the opportunity to play at Premiership level, albeit briefly and more than beyond his pseudo celtic (i.e pretend Welsh) capabilities. He should be kissing Bryan Robsons feet for giving him the chance instead of whinging!!!!

Soul Crew South Wales
I've got an Earnshaw Grogg at home with the little Welsh wizard wearing the mighty blue strip of Cardiff. I was going to smash it up when he left but changed my mind. I was thinking why keep it but I know 1 day he will wear the blue of Cardiff again.

ALI PEE
we will need rob!!!!!! for baggies when kanu goes to african nations hopefully he can get a few goals for albion class player!!!! come on u baggies!!!!!!!!!!! got money on u scoring so come on robbie!!!!!

Watson Waterstone from Amsterdam, Holland
I didn't know Earnshaw was so good. lol I think it's good he was born in Zambia, because European countries need lots of African players ^_^

Jo Bloggs from Merthyr Tydfil
hehe he can score with me when ever he likes :P

Wagner Chilembo in Lusaka - Zambia
Always feels great to learn that your own son is doing pretty well. Keep on doing well, and always remember that home is where the heart is. Is it too late for you to turn up for Zambia? It would be good to have you in our National Team one day. Good luck... in all you do.

Kachusha Mushikita from Kitwe Zambia
Good to hear you have Zambian blood. Apparently your birthplace Mufulira is the town which has produced so many great Zambian players - among them Kalusha Bwalya, the only one to be crowned african footballer of the year(1988) from the southern part of Africa. I hope your next holiday destination will be Zambia. Ask Kanu to come along.

Giacomo smith from cardiff
I think Earnshaw is the best player wales have got in the squad!!! When he used to play for Cardiff city id go watch him every time he played home or away. Since hes gone city aint there self's!!!! He is a awsum player and i hope he gose all the way in his career!!

jamie pepper, harrow, london
rob is a world class playa, hu shud b playin for brazil. he is bare sik and well fast nd i tink he isnt given enough credit 4 the skill he definitly has. to further his career he shud not b playin 4 west brom hu r rubbish, but watford, hus winning streak will help to betta him.

Dan Taylor, wba
i dont know why we dont play him more! hes a superb striker wiith pace, skill and that goalscoring instinct. what a player!

stanley kayembe, kitwe,zambia
what a good player! I hope that you get better and better, such that west brom will not be able to accommodate you. You are destined for big clubs in the world such as man utd, barca...

Peter
you can take ernie out of wales , but you can never take wales out of ernie

Mwawi Mfuni in USA
Hey bro you are getting there. Am in the States and it's always nice reading about a fellow Zambian. You really should folllow your heart but at the same time think bigger. You know you have made it, so spread yoru wings and get into international ball, at least in crucial times help your fellow Zambian country when you are needed. Be proud of where you're from, but shine where you are.

ali pee cannock
rob is class better than jon hartsen come on u baggies

Lauren Davies from Porth
Earnie is one of the best players for Cardiff eva dun now y e dun play for west brom. I think it's very sad. He's a class player and gives 100% when he steps on the pitch. I'v seen him play for city 1,000 times. He's my favorite player eva.

Akmal Tulyaganoff from Tashkent, Uzbekistan
I think Earnshaw is one the most progressive players in British football.

captain charisma from sunderland
robert is a living legend

big batitsa middlemiss from sunderland

Mr Lawthom, Cardinal Newman School.
He is a great character who defies the laws of physics, well almost.

Keith Muchunga
Class player!!

Kieran Evans from Wales
I like Robert Earnshaw because he is a good footballer - from your friend Kieran.

Rhidian Griffiths in Neath
Ernie deserves another chance at Premiership level. Top scorer with the Albion but his face doesn't fit with Robbo in charge! Still good enough to score the goals at that level.

Huw David, Llantrissant
Earnie, you were great at City and can't wait to see you play again on the hallowed turf that is Ninian Park in July 2005. There'll be a welcome in the Bob Bank awaiting. Hope you move on from West Brom, they don't deserve you mate. They're shocking and Robson hasn't got a clue.

Alun, Pwllheli
Earnshaw is the best player Albion will ever have.

Newcastle Upon Tyne
Earnshaw's the best in the world.

mike hill london
robert is the best player wales has got he is better than ryan giggs its a shame cardiff sold him they should buy him back so that they can get back to their winning ways

Big fan from Ponty
All the guys who said they taught Earnie football in school are full of it! He was older than you and we had about 5 football games in 5 years! He taught himself how to play the game and a good job he's done! More to come from the Prince.

Elain Jones from Aberystwyth
I love Earnie! He sooo cute! He's also a brilliant footie player. xxxxx

Josh James
Wales Rule

Jon Ford in Bridgend
Rob Earnshaw is an excellent goalscorer. He knows where the goal is. Earnie's fast and score lots of goals. I support the Bluebirds and earnie was my best player!!!!

Mr Nigel Lawthom Cardinal Newman School

Katie in West Brom
Are you the real Caerphilly No10(Stuart) I saw you play the other day? I heard you and the Earnmaster went to school together. You're awsome at rugby man. It won't be long before you have a hall of fame page man, when you finally play rugby for Zambia, you and Earnie really could be twins!!!

Katie
Stuart Thomas Caerphilly RFC no.10: You're not the Stuart I was on about! It's someone else.

C.Steadman Lansbury Pk Caerphilly
You're the best player I have ever seen, I think your'e amazing, and I miss not living by you any more. I always had a huge crush on you and really fancy you, never mind eh!!!! He's the true Welsh no 10!!!!!

Stuart Thomas Caerphilly rfc no10
Sorry Katie, for the mispelling of one of my words. See you for the next baggies game and we can cheer for our man Rob together. Keep it real homies.

Scott Atkins, Bangkok
I have £200 on him getting the Golden Boot next season, and £100 on him joining another club in the next 12 months. Top player, hopefully I'll win my bets for my new life in Thailand!!!

Katie in West Brom
Oi oi Earnie! Keep up the good work! Come on Baggies! - erm, Stuart ya spelt sumit wrong by the way haha

Simi - Zambian in Leeds
Earnie do your thing son, it's time you show these boys how it's done. Keep it up YOU DOING US ZAMBIANS PROUD don't listen to people like that Adrian from Zambia who made a comment earlier on. Follow your heart, and never forget where u from.

Clarkie from West Brom
Earnie is class. He should get at leats 20 goals a season and hope he gets Wales to Germany.

Simon Kazickas Baggies Fan
EARNIE EARNIE EARNIE ! Super Robert Earnshaw, what a player. Wworks for the team, scores goals, quick, athletic and glad your a Baggie. Hope you score loads of goals.

Stuart Thomas
All my life people have commented how how much we look alike, mainly due to us having the same hair styles. That's why you will always have a place in my heart.

Daniel Jones in Splott (Cardiff)
Earnshaw is my God, he's awesome! It makes a man feel proud to be Welsh when he slots in the goals for Wales, though he is from Zambia. I went to school with him and he's a genuine bloke! We gave eachother support when I was in Malta and he in Cardiff, and we could have still done it now.

Beth Hughes in Stourbridge
Earnie is an AMAZING player. Best luck in the future, your destined for better things than West Brom :p !! I am a teenager who plays football for a club and its people like you who show such enthusiasm and passion towards the beautiful game which make me want to suceed and go further just like you did. You are truly a great inspiration!I hope your career carries on flying high even though me and the rest of the Bluebirds miss you up good old Ninian! Do the Ayatollah my friend!! xxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx

Nicky Beecher from Pontypridd
One word : Hero

Daniel Jones from Splott (Cardiff)
I'm a huge fan of the Earnmeister and the person who gave his name as mentioned before by previous fans (see below). But the whole Maltese International thing is a myth as I was in prison when I was supposed to have played for them. But now a free man I travel to West Brom every time they play home and am an eager fan! All I can say 'GO EARNIE YOUR THE MAN'! XXX

Mark Dillion Ton-Teg
Top player, all round athlete, a real star, with more to come me thinks.

Amin Dadganijad Dublin Eire
Im a huge City fan and believe 'Earnie' could become a huge huge talent, I believe the Baggies will be a stepping stone to a big big club, ie a United or Euro giant. I met Earnie while at school, at Newman RC school. We played together for the school team as a forward partnership, we were explosive and scored 42 goals between us in our year together. I moved to Ireland and the partnership was gone. He is a truly awsome player now and I'm a milkman, so who was the talented of the duo can now be seen.

Paul Dellanna from Caerphilly
I was there when 'Earnie' first fell in love with football, and in fact it was I who taught him many of his tricks and skills. I wonder if in a biography he would name me as his gratest influence? I doubt it but I`ll never forget the stuff I taught him when I see him doing it on the field. I never made it, I`m glad he did. Top player, top man.

Karl Kendrick from Bargoed
Thats right Craig, I remember when Daniel Jones gave him the nickname. I didn`t know he was a sports star as well. I heard his Malta jersey was in Caerphilly RFC. Anyway, Earnie is going to be a massive, massive star. He`s a genuine, lovely bloke who deserves everything he gets. I`m so glad he chose Wales instead of Zambia. I love you mate. I wonder if you remember me from school?

Craig Steadman Lansbury Park
I went to school with Rob in Caerphilly and I remember when my friend at school, the now Malta international rugby player, nicknamed him Earnie at the age of 9 and its stuck ever since. You didn't show it then, but you're going to be world class now. Go for it and make as much money as you can, you deserve it brother!! You're a top fella.

Ashley, London village
Earnie is a bluebird through and through and a class player! I'll never forget his legendary FA Cup hat-trick to destroy Bristol Rovers - do the ayatollah my friend, do the ayatollah! We love Nakata!

Joel Jones from Brecon
Earnie is a living legend. We shouldn't have let him go especially for only £3m.

Ashley Hayes, Cardiff
He's world class.

Sophie Kaz, Cardiff

Earnie is a legend. He is the best footballer I have ever seen live and I have seen all the greats at some point - Cantona, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Van Nist - because he plays the game how it's supposed to be played - with passion! Do the ayatollah Earnie! You're welcome back down the Bluebirds any time. RESPECT

Keith Muchunga from Zambia living in Cardiff
Earnie, I am a Zambian. I've been watching u and the way u play is like a Zambian. My uncle has met u and he has spoke 2 u in Zambian - his name is Innocent Shabani. I live in Wales - just hope u think about Zambia.

Stuart Angell, Albion fan from Cradley Heath
Well done Earnshaw 3 goals in 2 games u are doin us baggie boys proud keep it up!

Adrian from Zambia

Nigel from Ystrad

Danny Gabbidon from Cardiff

Simon, West Brom

Ramos from Cefn Hengoed
A dip in form at the moment for Earnie, but what a chance to redeem himself this week against the scum! Go on Earnie - make a tit out of Becks and co.

Natalie Dew of Bramhall
We really miss you Earnie! Good luck for Wales - keep on scoring.

Eric Wishart from Glasgow
Pretty average player leaves a very average club for another. Bad career move - he'll end up back at Ninian Park in Divison 2 b4 long. Deservedly so.

Nigel, boing boing from Lower Penn
Earnshaw and Kanu should make a good pair, but also be a good double act like little and large! Baggies to stay up!

Anonymous from Wednesbury (Baggies fan??)
He is a great player, who is a proven goalscorer. He will be like Bob Taylor.

Mark from Cardiff
good luck earnie i'm sure we'll meet again maybe in the local barbers and you'll playing with cardiff city not just in the premiership but in the european champions league... well we all have dreams that become reality!!!

Daniel Barrett, North Cornelly
Earnie you have made me want to watch Wales again. You're in the same league as Michael Owen I do believe and you seem to have so much quality, the same as Owen yet Owen gets all the headlines and you don't. Good luck in the Premiership, I thnk you will take it by storm and finish with 20+ goals, you do me proud.

Estelle from Rhondda
Earnshaw made me a fan. I once worked with an ex City player Nathen Cadett - City players are pure gentlemen. Ernie deserves to play for a Premiership club but I don't think the Bluebirds will cope without him. The team became well balanced and worked well together as a team, Sam the man gave him a pay rise and kept Ernie with us. Well done Rob you've done it. Don't forget us.

Robert Mannings from Cardiff
Earnie, I'd just like 2 wish u all the best 2 West Brom & I hope that u continue 2 score 4 both them & Wales for the next 10 years or so. U were City's best striker in a long time & it was a pleasure to chant your name at the games. U were & will continue 2b a Bluebird & I hope u return(not for 2 high a price!) when we reach the premiership. All the Best. When u score do the Aiatala 4 us fans so we know u haven't 4got us please. Thanx again.

Adam Glover from Penylan
oy! i cant see how matthew peacock is being racist by saying that being a welsh international will hold him back? im welsh born in cardiff and have lived here most of my life and i concede that ian rush, mark hughes and ryan giggs have been held back career-wise by being welsh internationals and therefore being deprived of performing in european championships and world cups.

i mean liverpool juventus barcelona bayern munich chelsea and manchester united are a few of the world class club sides that these marvellous players have played for, so it is a crying shame that they were never given the chance to perform at the highest level due to the previous mediocrity of the welsh national sides.

hopefully the new breed of welsh stars like earnie danny gabbidon and james collins will go on to rectify the underachievements of their international predecessors...until then matthew peacock is right surely that being a welsh international hinders footballing development?

before anyone gets the wrong end of the stick im welsh.. a cardiff city bob bank regular and a earnie devotee.

Martyn Vaughan from West Bromwich
he is a wicked player for his age. i cant wait to c earnshaw and kanu upfront for west brom. thats what fans live for a gd team, with him and inamoto west brom will still up. gd luck cardiff you have made a gd player

Carlton from Cardiff
earnie i think im speaking for every cardiff city fan m8 we will miss u loads but we wish u all the best in the premiership and dont ever ever forget the city fans ........."EARNIES GUNNA GET YA"

Paul, Ipswich (Albion fan)
Well judging from you comments we've got ourselves a top player for a good price! Obviously a very tough decision for Ernie to make! If you end up with Hulse instead I hope he does well for you!

Lauren from Porth
Earnie is a class player he's saved city and Wales from losing their games he's a top goalscorer and my best player

Baggie Boy, West Bromwich

Greeny from Redhill
We love you Earnie, we do, we love you Ernie, we do, we love you Ernie, we do oh Ernie we do, oh Ernie we love you!!!! I think Ernie is a wonderful player and probably the best striker I have ever seen!

Michael
Earnie ur the man - don't let racists like Matthew Peacock put u off.

Matthew Peacock from London
Robbie Earnshaw is the most talented up and coming youngster in the game today - the only thing holding him back is being a Welsh international.

Callum Murray from Barry
He is amazing at football and he is my favourite football player.

Stevo and Vandy in Oxted
We think Ernie is awesome! An asset to Wales! Can't wait to see him perform in the Premiership!

Gift Phiri - fan from Lusaka
Hey Robert, I saw a report in the local paper that you want to play for Zambia. Is that true? If it is, man you are making the best decision of your life. Welcome to Zambia, Chipololo boys!!!

Stephanie Velasquez from Newport
I have supported Cardiff City since I was two years old. I have watched all their home games and I've never seen Robert Earnshaw with so much commitment to Cardiff City.

Jordan Cullen from Newport
I have supported Cardiff all my life, and of all the players of the Cardiff City team over the years - I have never seen such a player who has so much quality.

Gareth Storer from Cardiff
You have done so much for the Bluebirds and Wales. Keep it going.

Lou Zambian in the USA
Hey..always good to hear players with origins from my country do well. We're a hotbed for talent and our future's bright. Ernie good luck with Wales!

Ryan Mules from Penarth
Earnie is the best player in the business. Keep it up, boy.

Roy Davis in Pontypridd
Robert Earnshaw should be added to the Hall of Fame after his defeat of the Germans and the fact he is top scorer in the 4 divisions of the Football League.
