Neil Jenkins

Neil Jenkins Record-breaking Welsh rugby superstar

Born:
08 JUL 1971
Place of Birth:
Church Village
Famous For:
Record-breaking Welsh rugby superstar
Trivia:
No game featuring Jenkins was complete without his brother-in-law donning a ginger wig and plastic ears, kicking an inflatable sheep over the crossbar.
Biography:

One of the true giants of Welsh rugby, Neil Jenkins became the international scene's record points scorer despite playing during Wales's wilderness years.

Affectionately labelled GM (for Ginger Monster, Maestro or Magician), he is Wales's most capped player ever and the current world record holder for points scored in internationals, with 1,049 points for Wales and a further 41 in four tests for the British Lions.

Jenkins has remained an almost permanent fixture in the Welsh team since his debut against England in 1991, though he has on occasion been criticised and dropped for failing to fit the image of the legends who previously wore the Welsh number 10 shirt.

But his grit, stamina and determination have become symbols of the Welsh side of the past decade, and the team without Jenkins has been described as like Eastenders without Pauline Fowler.

Jenks played a key role in Pontypridd's success in the mid-1990s, helping the Valleys club win the league title and the Principality Cup.

A search for greater challenges led to a move to Cardiff, although his time in the capital was marked by injury problems.

Unable to regain his place in the team, Jenkins returned to Sardis Road to boost the Pontypridd cause in domestic and European competitions.

In May 2003 he announced his retirement from the international scene, but played a year of regional rugby for the now-defunct Celtic Warriors before hanging up his boots.

Moment of Glory:
When playing with the Lions in South Africa in 1997, Jenkins switched positions to fullback and booted the Lions to a memorable epic 2-1 series win

Always a pleasure to watch you playing in the 80's, a thorn in the opposition's side. You were never given the credit you deserved. A true Welsh legend.

Chris and Jane, Barry
A true legend of the game. We still love him.

Jack C, Pontypridd
A true legend, gentleman and Welshman. If Tom Jones can be given a Knighthood, then it's arise Sir Neil Jenkins.

Mike Sparling, Pontypridd
The best goal kicker in the history of rugby, no other player in the world could have kicked that penalty in South Africa.

Liam George
Legend, any need to say more

Jason Rigby from Blaenllechau
Neil Jenkins was the best kicker in the world. His record for the time, and amount of games played will probably never get beaten.

Carl Snooks, Beddau
Neil was the best number 10 and he should be next Wales coach.

Vensencho from Sri Lanka
One of the true greats of the game!

Elaine Howell, Newport
Neil is a great player and is such a nice person as well. He played his best for Wales and done us proud. I lived in Ponty for many years and spent all my youth there, and I have a daughter that lives in Cilfynydd. We are proud to have had Neil playing for Ponty and for Wales. Neil, you will never be forgotten and we can't thank you enough for all that you have done on and off the field. We wish you all that's good in life, Neil, as you deserve it. Da iawn bach xxx

Zoe Chappell from Mountain Ash
Neil Jenkins is a legendary rugby player - I just want to thank him for playing for Ponty, Cardiff and Wales as he has brought a lot of glory to our country. Best moment including Neil is the match I watched in the Millennium Stadium where he was about to take a conversion but fell on his bum ... legend rugby player and comedian!

Vowlesy from Llanharry
As they say: To be born Welsh is not to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth but to be born with passion and pride in your heart... Neil, for your passion your hard work and devotion to all that is Wales ... thanks, Jinks.

Ryan Short from Cardiff
He is well cool - what a legend.

Grace Day from Dalgety Bay
Neil was the best by far and still is.

Ceri from Abercynon
What a genius, the best no 10 ever. Thanx Neil.

Donkinkin from Swansea
I think that Neil Jenkins is an amazing kicker and he is better than Jonny Wilkinson by far. I followed him all the time he played for Wales and if he was still playing he should play for the Lions instead of Jonny.

Adam Taylor, Bromsgrove
I thought you were the best Welsh kicker ever.

Noel LR from Dublin
Neil Jenkins was the most reliable place kicker I ever saw in rugby. You could always count on him never to buckle under pressure. When he first appeared against England in 1991 as a youngster I thought here goes another place kicker to pass through, but he turned out a legend!

Jordan Hart, Pembrokeshire
Neil was and is a great asset to Welsh rugby. Now part of the Welsh team once more in a different role but still helping Wales to be the best possible side !!!!!!!

Howard from Cilfynydd
Neil, thanks for the memories, which I will always treasure. From your first senior Ponty game at Stradey to your farewell at the Millenium Stadium with Jason Leonard, I was fortunate enough to see every game you played at Sardis Road and many elsewhere. Not only a great player, but more importantly was and still is just like the boy next door, so approachable. Just fantastic! All the best and thanks a million from a Ponty nut!

Mahoney from Llantwit Fardre
Neil was the best fly-half Wales and possibly the world has ever seen. His reading of the game was amazing and his passing and distribution skills were frightning. Do I even have to mention his kicking skills? They are the best the world has ever seen. He has been my inspiration throught his playing days. Let's just hope the talent that he's got doesn't go to waste. Pass it on to the younger generation, Neil.

Valley Boys down under
Great guy on and off the field - played against him and on the same team. Thanks for the memories - worse thing Welsh rugby done was to force him to Cardiff and disband Pontypridd rugby from the Celtic League. Best supporters in world rugby from the valleys - always show our colours.

John from Fort William
I had the great pleasure of watching him at Sardis Road in the early 90s when I lived in Ponty. Like all the true greats he made a difficult skill look easy. He played with consummate skill, determination and fairness.

Roy Lloyd from Llanelli
I know I'll be accused of being biased but although Neil may not have been a Barry or a Bennie he was a great ambassador for Ponty, Wales and the Lions. As someone has already said a great guy both on and off the field. Well done Neil - just keep on being who you are, a truly NICE guy.

Robert Tucker, from Cilfynydd
A good player, but brilliant kicker. Come back Neil, share your knowledge with the youngsters.

Daniel Tomkinson Armytage from Treorchy
Neil Jenkins is my godfather, and he's the best kicker in the world. I have started playing at fly half after a couple of years at full back.

Bunny, Pontyclun
A true Welsh legend - played with heart on his sleeve. The best place kicker Wales and the world has ever seen, and probably will ever see. Good luck for the future.

Mike from Tonteg
A bloody nice guy on and off the pitch. LEDGEND

Roddy Owen from Amersham, Bucks
One of the few players who deserve the title legend. His performances against France in Paris, in South Africa for the British Lions, his feat of a world record of kicking points, his cut out passes. Just incredible. Planet Rugby classes him as a legend and a wonderful ambassador for the game.

Justin, Rhondda boy
I remember the Scott Gibbs try at Wembley, out of this world! Your kick was as good, but your all round game over the years has been outstanding, cheers for that.

James Tomkinson, Treorchy age 13
Favorite ever player thats why i want to play rugby P.S. my nickname is Jenks ginger hair as well all the best from Jenks

bobby Church Village
neil for welsh coach

Fran Richards and son Ashley, Pembrokeshire
Neil will always be an all time great. Ashley has a pic with him and Neil taken by myself and was signed at his testimonial at Ponty. What a loss to Ponty when he went to Cardiff, but a bigger loss when teams had to be joined.

David Thomas, Efail Isaf
Not a bad youth cricketer also for the under 13s at Llantwit Fardre.

Liam Harris from Ystradgynlais

Tim from Kidderminster
As geniune off the pitch as on - simply the greatest 10 of his era. I feel privileged to have met him and blessed to have watched him play.

Shane Cokayne from Talbot green
I am doing an English report on Neil. All the other boys are doing one on Gavin Henson , but I say Neil makes Gavin look like a amateur.

John Efail Isaf
Neil amassed his points total for Wales on the back of a poor Welsh side. Imagine what could have been achieved with a successful Welsh side?

Daniel from Grangetown
Owain Glyndwr, Dylan Thomas, Neil Jenkins - Welsh Heroes. I don't need to say anymore.

Robert Evans from Ontario Canada originally Aberda
Neil Jenkins has every right to be called a hero, he wore is heart on his sleeve for club and country and deserves every accolade spoken or written about him.Jonny Wilkinson should take notes on how to play the game.

Truthful from Ponty
Shouldn't of gone to Cardiff!

Gary from pontypridd
i wish jenks was allowed to playfor wales as he did for ponty but some welsh coaches would not let him or picked a player who looked like a little school boy lost on the pitch (arwel) a true welsh legend and aways should be

jeff from treorchy

This man is not a touch on Jonny Wilkinson. He still has a lot to learn compared to Jonny. Jonny is the complete kicker.
