Mike Ruddock

Mike Ruddock Grand Slam winning rugby coach

Born:
05 SEP 1959
Place of Birth:
Blaina
School:
Nantyglo Comprehensive
Famous For:
Grand Slam winning rugby coach
Biography:
The man who restored the fortunes of Welsh rugby by coaching the 2005 Grand Slam winning team surprisingly stepped down mid way through their defence of the title.

A flanker during his playing days, Ruddock played for his hometown club of Blaina, Tredegar and Swansea, scoring 43 tries in 119 games.

But apart from captaining Wales under-16s against England in 1975 and playing for Wales B in 1982, international honours didn't come his way.

Ruddock's playing career was cut short by a head injury suffered during his day job as an electricity linesman.

He turned his hand to coaching, first with Blaina, Cross Keys and Bective Rangers, before returning to Swansea.

Under his guidance the All Whites won two league titles, a Welsh Cup, and beat Australia 21-6 in 1992.

This led to a role as assistant coach of Wales during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, but after missing out on the top job he left for Ireland in 1997.

Winning plaudits for his work with Leinster and Ireland A, Ruddock returned to Wales in 2000 as coach of Ebbw Vale, taking charge of Newport Gwent Dragons in the era of regional rugby.

After missing out twice before, his appointment as Wales coach in March 2004 came as a surprise to many who'd expected to see Llanelli's Gareth Jenkins get the job.

Building on the foundations of his Kiwi predecessors Graham Henry and Steve Hansen, the 2005 Grand Slam made Ruddock a national hero.

However, disquiet grew within the Wales camp over the coach's desire for a more structured game than the free-flowing rugby many thought had been the key to Welsh success.

Even so, the shock at Ruddock's initial appointment was exceeded by that of his sudden departure after just two games of the 2006 Six Nations tournament.

Dave Evans, now in Australia
Mike Ruddock appears to have maintained a dignified silence about what really went on behind the scenes. Many other coaches make reference to the structure of the WRU being the true problem with the Welsh game. Until this changes Wales will never get back to where it should be in the rugby pecking order. Thanks Mike for helping Wales win a Grand Slam. I look forward to one day hearing his side of the story.

Hugh Thomas, originally from Blaina
After what happened against Scotland at Murrayfield in the 2007 Six Nations we need to get Mike back at the helm - make him an offer he can't refuse. As far as the troublemakers are concerned Gareth Thomas is probably out of the picture and Steve Lewis has been kicked out.

Jordan Hart, Pembrokeshire
Mike is a fabulous asset to Welsh rugby. A shame he left the Wales side when he did, but on behalf of Wales thank you for your contribution to Welsh rugby - and showing the world that Wales are the best rugby side in the world !!!!!

S James, Blaina
Well done Mike, all the best for the future, for whatever it is. Thanks for 2005.

Chris, Machynlleth
Mike has done a fantastic job but as soon as there is a little glich, a little knock of confidence in the WRU, someone needs to be blamed. Mike has been made a scapegoat for something. There is no loyalty anymore.

Adele, Blaina
Mike has put Blaina on the map (finally) he's a national hero goood old Uncle Mike!!!!be a shame to see him go...

Mole Thomas from Caldicot
Excellent man. He is now a Legend in Welsh Rugby and no one can take away the Pride, Glory and Euphoria that Mike and the team brought to Wales. Thankyou Mike and the Team.

Martin Turner
A sad day. Why are we so intent on self destuction? What on earth has gone on?

Colin Coombes Ex Pontygwaith Rhondda
Hi, I believe Mike Ruddock has done the right thing. Why? If as is reported that he wanted to play a more structered game, which in my opinion was needed against England then it would appear that the players are playing the game on their conditions and this surely cannot be the way forward. Yes I love to see Wales play their exciting rugby but surely there are times when you have to have a "Boring" game plan to beat the stronger forward playing teams like New Zealand, and England. I really thought we were nieve to think we were going to beat England by just playing expansive Rugby. We should have worked the touchline kicking game and tried to tire them out first. Good Luck Wales in the future. Colin.

John Owen. Goytre.
There is one important question to put to Steve Lewis. 1. Mike had apparently agreed the new contract but had put off signing. 2. Mike had agreed to honour his current contract to the end of this years championship games. 3. Why pull the plug now. ????????

Victor Rizzo, Whitchurch.
For the management of the WRU not to agree a new contract with Mike before this season started was a failure of judgement on their part. It would be regarded as a lack of confidence in a man who had helped our team achieve so much and appears to have been designed as such. As for player power, no one should be surprised if the antics of a media conscious player upset other team members. They will not want to work with a man who tells tales for money.

Brian Turner, Tredegar
He did much to restore the pride in Welsh rugby, only half the story is told and only he knows the other half. I would reserve any judgement.

clive goodman Tredegar
here we go again, a breathtaking lack of support for a truly genuine man, the lack of integrity of some players and officials has yet to fully emerge, when it does it will be interesting to see if those Judas types behave with the same integrity and dignity that our mike has, its disgusting !

P Williams from Llanelli
The timing of the announcement of his departure, together with the alleged offer to stay at the helm until the end of the six nations campaign being turned down, leads me to believe there's a far more deep seated reason for his departure. What Jonathan Davies has said about things coming out in the next few weeks is probably very true. It's a shame and can only unsettle the whole camp. It might even set Wales back several years.
