My uncle was the great Jack Peterson also from Wales, so it's just great to see Joe Calzaghe doing so well. You beaut, mate. What a bonzer boxer. Go Joe.
Alison Perry, New Tredegar
Well done butt!
dave from tamworth
joe's a good journey man, no doubt about it, but as good as Ali, you gotta be kidding! I enjoy his fights as much as the next man. But there is only one ALI! I doubt anyone will achieve as much as ALI, he is a once in a lifetime boxer. Also Joe should get his fan base organised.
Matthew Lewis from Newport
The best boxer Britain has produced and yet another Welsh boxer to be on top of his game. Come on Joe, beat Dawson and Pavlik and cement your legacy!!!
Ali Ainslie from Pittenweem
Mmmwwwaaaah! You are the best Joe, hope you come back for one more fight, you're going to be soooo missed..... what a champ. I can't even find words xxx
Guy Pagan, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Joe, you've proven yourself. A promotional company is a wonderful idea. A way to give back to those who dream big themselves. I've been associated with the sport for most of my life. Champions like yourself inspire my guys. We look forward to being part of your future successes - Don't forget us?
Bernard Bigginton, Sidcup, Kent
Joe Calzaghe, the greatest name in the history of boxing nationally and internationally. A credit to himself, and the pride of Great Britian!
Kevin Davies, Blackwwod
Perfection is hard but not if you're Joe Calzaghe. Joe's beaten them all, time to retire now Joe and give someone else a chance.
John Wilkinson, New Britain, Connecticut, USA
To Luke Fox, Aberbargoed: It is TOMMY FARR. John from Manchester: Calzaghe is -Now- Mate but as far as him being equal w/ the names you've mentioned. Hagler? Well...Marvin was a division lower, you know? Julian Jackson, too, One AND Two divisions below. He'd certainly rate above Sibson. A Graham bout would be interesting. Dily's from Crawley - DVD's - search the Blue Pages in Boxing Digest. The Outpouring I see here -Mostly from "British" fans- it is really amazing! And good to see, too! Keep up the great work rate there Joe.
John Colley, Doncaster
Joe was absolutely sensational against Roy Jones Jnr. Joe is a credit to sport and to Wales. Joe is a great role model to all young kids who play sport. He is the greatest fighter on the planet. Good luck to Joe in the future whatever he decides to do.
D Griffing, Monmouth
It's hard to add anything to all the great comments already posted, but it's inspiring for us to see the spirit of a great Celt warrior behaving in a way that would bring a smile to our ancestors... Your heart is better than luck, and so I wish you continued good heart at anything you put your hand to.
James, Cardiff
I'm a very proud Welshman. I would simply like to say nobody can take your place in boxing away from you.You are in the the history books with the likes of the great Ali etc. No matter what your critics say. For me I know you are the very best. Nice win against Roy Jones Jnr.
Ray Lewis from Battle, East Sussex
Joe is the best fighter pound for pound and has proved it time and time again. I do hope he retires now, still at the top. We will all miss him in the ring but he has nothing more to prove. Thanks Joe, for some really rememberable fights - you will never be forgotten. Well done Joe.
Derek Collins ex Newbridge
Another exellent fight with Roy Jones Jr. British people called Jeff Lacey a bum. The American people knew his prowess in the ring. Joe out classed Jeff Lacey in every round with a broken wrist. Could Benn, Eubank or Watson have done it? Well done Joe
Robert Jones, Newport
The only fight out there is Pavlik, due to the fact Calzaghe has beat everyone. Kelly losing to Hopkins doesn't matter as styles make fights and it's a business. Well done to Joe and hopefully we'll see him take out Pavlik next and go 47-0 :-)
Alan Taylor Newport
Many people are supporting Lewis Hamilton for Sportsman of the Year, but please everybody, vote for Joe. Much as I admire Hamilton, he has plenty of time left.
Duncan Ryan, Melbourne, Australia
Good luck in your final fight - you have from start to finish of your career always been a gentleman and carried yourself with great pride and dignity. You bring pride to all people from the UK and raise the spirits of the nation when you box. You deserve to go out a champion so keep your focus for one last time and win, win well.
Delilah Knause, Ohio, USA
I was glad to see Kelly Pavlik lose to Bernard Hopkins. Now that should quiet all the doubters about how great you are, Joe. If Kelly could not beat Bernard how does he ever expect to beat you? His loss proves you are the greatest of all time. I wish you all the luck with your upcoming fight with Roy Jones Jr, but I don't think you will need it because I know you are going to win with style, flair, and just the right amount of cockiness. I love you Joe - I love watching you box. I am just sorry that I missed out on most of your career because the USA just started showing your fights a few years ago. I wished I could have seen all of them and watched you grow into the great man that you are. Good Luck.
Darren Hawthorne-Price, Cwmcarn
Joe trains near my house - he's always got time to speak to people and the children around the village. He does a lot for our community and the Sparkle appeal. He is a great ambassador for Wales and a true gentleman like his dad outside the ring. But when in the ring Joe goes to work and he does it well. Best of luck - you don't need luck!
Dan Festa from Northampton
Although you are a good boxer i think the sheer power of The Hitman would lay you out. Although Ricky Hatton never proved himself in America and you did, I still think that if Hatton came up against you it wouldn't be a fight.
Dan Bail, Cardiff
I can't wait for Joe to show everyone what he's made of on the 8th November against Roy Jones Jr! "I will go out with a bang, insists Calzaghe" I don't want him to retire but he's definitely going with the quit-while-you're-ahead motto!!!
Ashley from Wales
He is just a legend - go Joe!
Kieran from Tyrone
I read Frank Warren's article at the weekend (27th September 2008). I was disappointed to read some of the things Warren said. I hope Calzaghe shuts him up by proving himself in the ring in emphatic fashion against Jones.
Delilah Knause USA Ohio
You are the best boxer of all time. I get such enjoyment from watching you fight. I describe you as a tornado, whirly-gig, spinning top, and wild crazy punching machine all rolled into one. You are not the greatest Welsh boxer, you are the greatest boxer of all time and should replace Ali as such. You are such a humble man out of the ring. You are not in to trash talk or bad mouthing, but in the ring you have just the right amount of cockiness that seems to just come from you naturally. You are a pure pleasure to watch. Good luck in your upcoming fight against Roy Jones Jr. I know you will win in the style and flare I am accustomed to seeing in your fights. I hope he doesn't try to hug you all night like Hopkins did. That must be so frustrating for you. I know you said this is going to be your last fight, but after the win I hope you take on Kelly Pavlik and kick his young butt. You're already the greatest in the world and you have nothing to prove to anyone, but sadly I think it will be the only way to shut up the doubters and secure your place as the greatest of all time.
lee ebbw vale
Joe is the greatest welsh boxer of all time, wish i could slap like himgood luck against jones. Hope he fights tarver after jones.
Gareth Robinson
Hi, I agree with Keith Bowen's comment and he is without a doubt not just the best boxer Wales has ever produced but more accurately the best ever British boxer (Lennox a good second place). His legacy will be sealed if he can pull of a win against Roy Jones Junior in November 2008. Go on Joe! By the way, I have built a fansite on his upcoming bout with Roy Jones Junior which I think Calzaghe fans would find intersting. Visit www.calzaghe-fight-news.com when you have a moment.
Carl from Cardiff
Taylor beat Hopkins twice and drew with Winky Wright so surely that makes Pavlik's two wins over Taylor all the more impressive. As for Pavlik being dropped, he came off the floor to win and knock out Taylor. Calzaghe was dropped by Hopkins so I don't think thats a feasible comment.
Russell Samuel from Carlisle
Just read the autobiography, couldn't put it down! I was born in England but lived in Newport from the ages of two to eleven. I am proud to be Welsh and have roots and family in Wales. Joe is a legend and deserves all the success and support of a true warrior and he is a grounded, humble man with a great supportive family behind him. You're a hero and an idol. All the best Joe!
QJ from Spain
Pavlik has only ever beaten one man who belongs in the same ring as JC, Taylor, and he was decked in the first of those. If he wants to earn that fight, let him go and beat Hopkins, or even Winky Wright or even Mayweather. I wouldn't bet on him to win any of those.
Lee from Newport
Joe should fight Pavlik - he could retire then knowing he beat the hardest man in his era. Eubank was too old as was Hopkins, Lacy had no experience and was one-dimensional! Kessler came with a great record and was a fine fighter but he's no Pavlik... I understand Joe had to take the fights but Jones is a step backwards for me. In terms of being remembered a legend the American writers won't have it - they know who the man is and that's Kelly Pavlik. Good luck Joe, hope you make the right choice - I am a fan and have watched you over twenty times live!
Steven McNamara
I don't think he could have lived with Roy Jones Jr in Jones' early days, but you gotta give him credit. I'm English by the way and Joe is a far better fighter than Hatton, Honeyghan, Lewis, etc.
Nicki Powell, Blackwood
Joe, you make me proud to be Welsh. You are the best and such a humble man.
Dana Caldwell, Caerphilly
I have only just started watching boxing and couldn't believe what I have been missing. Joe is brilliant and even better because he's Welsh. Go on you beauty xxx
Tamsine Fieldhouse, Leeds
He is such a legend! Hopkins should just take a sign saying loser and pin it to himself and stop crying about the fact he lost. Just because he knocked him down in the first round does not mean that he won the fight. He couldn't even win in his own country and the judges were all from America so what does that say for him. Joe Calzaghe is just the greatest fighter around at this time! I totally respect his talent.
Sarah Young
Joe is the best and will always be a champion those who have seen his fights will know that Kessler was a hard fight and so was Hopkins. Hopkins held Joe's arm over and over again and also had him in head locks to get punches in. Whoever it is that said Joe's rubbish hasn't got a clue. You get in the ring with him then he is as much a champ as Ali, and whoever said that Joe should fight the Great Eubanks er newsflash he did and battered him. Eubanks said at the time of the fight he would take Joe out in first round he wasnt past it he just couldn't touch Joe. Me and my family love Joe and we will always support him. Also he is the sports personality of the year that proves how much the real fans love him.
Sandra from Newport
He should give it up now - he's proved himself and shouldn't risk injury. A great Welsh champ!
Rachel Swales, Mountain Ash
Joe, you are an amazing boxer who doesn't get all the recognition that you deserve. You didn't need to prove to anyone your ability, but you went to Vegas, and beat Hopkins on points, and after all his mouthing off! I never once doubted you! I just hope you have that one more fight, so I can show my support in person! You are my hero!!
Mike Sully, Rhondda
Joe, you're like Neil Jenkins - never have the praise you deserve. An Englishman scores one drop goal and he's hailed as the best in world! You Joe beat the best in world so let them stew over that - proud to be Welsh.
Valentina Mazzoleni - ex Newport girl
When God wanted to create a masterpiece he put a Welsh beautiful women, with a Italian beautiful man, a better mix you will never find. I am proud to be Welsh-Italian. Like you joe - go for Gold. YOU ARE THE GREATEST: TE VOGLIO BENE, CARUSO, LUCIO DALLA
Pete from Heathfield, East Sussex
Just watched your fight with Bernard Hopkins and once again the same result. One more nail in the coffin of the doubters out there who must be getting pretty thin on the ground by now I'd have thought. I'm 58 years old now and have been a boxing fan ever since i can remember. Seen a lot of good fights/fighters, and in my opinion you are up there with the very best of them. (Ali, Sugar Ray, Teofilio Stevenson etc). I only wish I'd been able to come to Cardiff when my son and his mates came to support you at the Kessler fight. It's been a great pleasure for me watching your career in the noble art over the years, and for that, many thanks. Whatever you decide to do in the future, good luck. Simply the very best.
Molly Adams from Morristown, New York
Is there a lady or children in Joe's life?
S. James - Blaina
Good luck for Saturday Joe. You will go down as the greatest sportsman ever to come out of wales.
Dayfydd Jones from America
I take great pride in anything Welsh. I and other Welsh-Americans are behind you Joe. You have our attention and hope you win in Vegas.
Mark, Harrogate
Go on Joe show 'em how it's done were all proud of you and behind you don't let Hopkins grind you down.
Nathan
Joe Calzaghe is the best fighter that has ever lived, he worked his way to the top from nothing but the love of boxing ..well done Calzaghe
Michael Williams, Wrexham
We all love Calzaghe.
PARTY BOY 1
I wish you all the very best for the fight I have followed your career closely and yes you are the best out there by a mile proven hands down. You're not the best in Wales or the UK though, you're the best in the world and i think Hopkins will see this on the 19th good luck go prove to the yanks how good you are all the best for the rest of the Welsh boys fighting.
Greg b the wood
That blog that Jonathan Ried of newport wrote was utter tosh how can you say Paul Samuels is better than Joe. What has he done what will he he do in future. Let us all know in 10 years time. If he his still boxing that is! Don't criticise unless it is constuctive, people that spout dribble. That's all i got to say Joe is the best out thier and his record speaks for itself 39/0 that enough for you! Joe all the best against old man Hopkins dont think Paul Samuels will ever get to fight in Las Vegas. Keep up the work Joe you are the best.
Greg Brown, Blackwood
I feel that Joe's exeptional heart and motivation to the sport of boxing speaks for itself and all the doubters have been proven wrong problem with this nation is if he was English they would be shouting from the top of the tallest building look at our boy the best in the world. He his proud of his roots and with his humble attitude as stood him good stead over the whole of his boxing career world champion taking on all comers that's the best record out their and speaks for itself. All the best, give old man hopkins a chin shining on 19th of april Joe luck Joe do it for the British public hopefully th e english nation may support with fight.
Julie Cruise, Harlech north Wales
Joe is certainly a world class boxer and yet still has to prove himself to the world! What makes joe a special boxer is the fact he does it with dignity and he is so cooooool it's unreal. Well done Joe, you certainly are an undefeated champ of the world and do you agree that a crtain mr jdb can pack a punch?
Gareth from Hengoed
Performance against Jeff Lacy was out standing - by far the best fight I have seen. I've been two 20-odd fights of his and loved every one, and im sure thousands will say the same - you're a true fighter Joe and i wish you all the best againt Hopkins and the rest of your days champ.
Arif Zina
I think Joe Calzaghe is great but he is not the best out there. Manfredo was a useless boxer - God knows how he got to the finals in The Contender. Jeff Lacey was overhyped - he had no defence at all, he kept going forward taking a thousand punches. He only had plan A - knocking out Joe. When he realised it was not going to happen he looked totally out of place like a child lost in a supermarket. I must say the only convincing fight for Joe was Mikkel Kessler but I did think that Joe was kind of running away from him in the 12th round. Joe has got the best stamina I have ever seen in boxing and a very good heart. He is very clever but I think he should retire soon because if he fights someone like Pavlik he will have trouble.
A Robertson
Joe is one of the all time greatests in boxing. He's just outstanding
Wayne Jenkins, Blackwood
Grew up with Joe, in the same street and Pentwynmawr junior school. I am very proud of Joe's achievements in and out of the ring. I have spoken to Joe a few times recently and he is so so humble, you wouldn't think he was undisputed world champ by the way he talks. Class act !!
John Wilce from Malaga
Sixty years ago, in Barry, my father introduced me to a little old man: "Son, this is Jimmy Wild, the greatestboxer ever, bar none!" What an honour to shake his hand. The old man was right. But the Great Joe is the greatest living boxer, bar none!
Kruger, Tunbridge Wells
JC has been and will be the best pound for pound fighter Britain has seen since Honeyghan. Phenomenal hand speed, able to go up in weight and the nous to adapt while fighting. All "so called" greats have shyed away from him in the last 5 years, which is unfortunate. Cos he would be more recognisable to the world if he had already beaten them, as he would have if they had not mede excuses to side step him. If he was a natural heavyweight he would have been compared to Ali.
Morgan Minchin from Oxford
It is about time that we recognise the sheer brilliance of Joe Calzaghe. Let's pick somebody who has won and deserves credit for the British Sports Personality of the Year 2007. Not people who have not won anything like Hamilton, Robinson or Wilkinson!
Gavin Jones, Pontypool
Joe is the best in his division - that was a hard fight with Kessel but he showed him who was the man. The Americans know Joe is a great fighter now but Joe has to beat Hopkins, then he will conquer America. Good luck Joe - Hopkins is goner get a face lift hahaha!
Ashley Copeland, Newport
Hi - you are a good boxer and it's nice to know you are a Welsh one! Keep representing Wales, Joe x
Dale Warner from Bridgend
Joe that fight with Chris Eubank was the best I think any way you was the best then and you are now so good luck on the heavyweight match. Hope you do well
Allan Thomas, Hafodyrynys
Joe's fantastic, Credit to Newbridge & Wales. Enzo must be some special kind of trainer. Recognition finally coming.
Johnpaul Harrison
haha to the people who think kessler would beat him :D
Qasim Khan from East Ham
Joe is good and a fantastic boxer, but he won't be in world history until he beats Hopkins
Steve Hughes Larsen
Well I saw a great Champion beat our bloke Mikkel Kessler sunday morning!!And he deserves to get a knighthood for his achievements in boxing!!I thought Joe was past it ... but I was wrong, Kessler was wrong, and all of Skandinavia was wrong!!Joey Calzaghe is a Legend ... all you welsh people already knew that though did you?? I had to wait until Sunday morning at the Millenium Stadium to find out that Joe is a great boxer ... the best ever british fighter!!Well done Joe and his dad for being real champs and hope Joe meets up with Hopkins coz Joe would be too fast for him.Well done and Joes now got to be the sports personality of the year in Britain for the second year.Danishhh Steve from AALBORG, Denmark.
Lin, London
Maybe finally the doubters will shut up. Joe Calzaghe has faced his critics yet again and done the buisness. Talk of fighting bums is incidental now. He fought Lacy and it was a lose, lose situation. Had Lacy won, people would have said, "See, I knew he was rubbish." But he did such a job on Lacy, people just said Lacy was overrated and Joe didn't get the credit he deserved. Then he wastes his time fighting Manfredo, just to pander to the American audiences. Hopefully now after beating Kessler, no one can argue that he is not the best. Kessler is a better fighter now, than Hopkins and Jones who are well past their best, but I know it's not until he beats one of them (an American marquee name) that he'll truly cement his place in history. The Americans dont care about European fighters, so beating Kessler isn't enough.Well done Joe, true boxing fans have known for a long time what you've proven this weekend. As for talk about Benn, Eubank, Collins and Watson, I think it's just a shame Joe was a little too young to get them at their primes, because, he'd have done a number on them too.
Kevin Roberts from Conwy
All the calls to make Joe a Knight are ridiculous, he is a famous Welsh Warrior and only the idiots who run Welsh rugby would covet such irrelevant titles. Well done Joe, stay Welsh, you dont need any titles.
Nick Pike, Abercarn
All I can say to Joe's critics after last saturday night's exploits is EAT HUMBLE PIE U MUPPETS! Joe once again proved against a quality opponent that he is the best of all time! He had to take some ferocious shots but came through to win hands down! I hear no complaints from the Kessler camp on that score! Bring on hopkins & da $s!
Nikki Shepheard,Cardiff
Joe,The people of Wales are behind you 100%, No need for pre-match fight talk..show 'cocky' Kessler that action speaks louder than words!!!"Knighthood for Calzaghe!"
Rabbit, Hampshire
We're all going to cheer Joe on - we KNOW he can beat the Dane - c'mon Joey!!!
Philip Rostance
Joe needs to be careful early on with the looping right hand over the top - which southpaws are open to. (Kalambay v Graham)The Dane, though, is open to the left cross - and I think his chin might not be as good as people think. Joe is likely to wear down and stop his foe between rounds 6-8. That, of course, is if he does not sustain cuts through head butts...could even be a Technical Decision like with Honeyghen v Vaca - almost, 20 years ago to the week.
Nicola Smith of Merthyr Tydfil
Well done Joe! Proof is in the pudding with his win against Kessler last night, will be a shame to see him retire. I'm a big fan of Joe's.
Amanda, Newcastle
Joe Calzaghe is a ledgend. He's amazin, I actually got to meet him I was so lucky, I got to serve his dinner to him at sunderland when I was at work. Great match last night joe!
Janis, Barry Island
Eat your words all you doubters! Oh, but of course you'll find some excuse not to believe Joe is one of the best fighters of all time. My husband says he should have the recognition he deserves and so say all of us. We wish him and his family the very best.
Rodsta McRodsta, London
I hope all you Kessler fans didn't lose too much money on this one. I loved the remark about Kessler's speed. As Shanks would say 'his speed is deceptive, he is slower than he looks'.
Dan Adams, Jackson, New Jersey, USA
Excellent match-up, and kudos to HBO for putting this fight on for the American public. Great respect for the abilities of both fighters, but methinks Calzaghe is too adaptable for Kessler. I think Joe can fight any way he has to fight to win ... he'll box or slug, as needed; but I don't think Kessler can switch his style as easily, and that may be the difference. My prediction, then? Calzaghe by unanimous decision or late-round stoppage. Good luck to both fighters and their respective fans.
Jonas Hughes Larsen
I'm going to see this BIG fight with my dad at the Millenium Stadium, and we're both really looking forward to this historic event - let´s get ready to rumble. It´s the biggest fight ever staged in Europe, so it's fantastic!! Mikkel is a great bloke he signed my boxing gloves and gave me a photo autograph of himself and photos with him and my friends in Ålborg. He's a gentleman.. and you boxing fans must have noticed that he's not a big head.Mikkel Kessler cant possibly lose this fight ... Mikkel's the "new guy on the bloke" now, just like Joey Calzaghe was when he beat Chris Eubank more than ten years ago!!Joey's in the same situation as Eubank .. past his prime (1997)!! This fight won't go the distance ... if it does then it's going to be X-rated!! I'm going for a sixth round win to Mikkel Kessler... I know it's going to be a bit dirty ... holding, head clashes, rabbit punches, low blows... so let's hope weve got a good referee!!?? May the best man win.... well done Mikkel.
Nic, Roskilde, Denmark
I am pretty darn sure Kessler will be the toughest test for Calzaghe has ever experienced. After all Kessler is WBC and WBA title holder. My concerns on Kessler's behalf is that the fight is being boxed in Wales with maybe some 60,000 Calzaghe spectators supporting Calzaghe fanatically. The home ground is super important to any boxer. The promotors of the two boxer have been extremely aware of that. The purse offers of the two promotors on this match were numerous. This tells how important the home advantage is. I foresee a very tight match which could end with a draw. All the very best to both fighters and all the very best to us watching this truly very interesting and blistering fight:D
Steve Hughes Larsen
Hi boxing fans!! Well this fight is getting close, and I'm sure it´s going to be a classic!! But I'm surprised that Calzaghe is favourite to win this fight. Mikkel Kessler is in better condition/fighting form now than for his last fight against Andrades the WBC number 1 contender. I would like to wish Joey Calzaghe all the best because he's been there at the top for so many years without losing. This I'm sure will be a dirty fight in the first couple of rounds ... but once Mikkel hits Joe then I'm sure this fight will be well and truly over inside six rounds!! Just mark my words ... ha, ha.. Denmark. Good Luck to both fighters - they've got respect for each other outside the ring ... but there won't be any respect on the 3/4th November in the Millennium Stadium!!Steve Hughes Larsen ps; I will be there in the Millenium Stadium and celebrating with the viking army X
Darren Thomas, Aberdare
Joe is without doubt the best pound for pound fighters in the world. I am in the army and I get alot of english people telling me he is over rated, I say to them look at his record.
Rachel Hillard from Pontypool
I think Joe must be the greatest Welsh boxer - well, to be honest, the best boxer in the whole wide world. When he gives up boxing he could be a male model - he is absolutely gorgeous.
Skandinavian Steve
Hi boxing fans, well this is the BIG one!!Mikkel Kessler is def gonna be too young & fast for Joey Calzaghe. Kessler´s strengh will show in the very early rounds. I'm going for a knockout for the "Viking Warrior" inside six rounds!! But respect to Joey Calzaghe for being a champion for so long ... and to lose his last fight against Mikkel K isn't a bad thing!! I will be there at the Millennium Stadium along side the Viking Army!!
Samantha D from Temple Hills, MD, USA, orig Birmin
LUV YA JOE!!!!We are STILL singing your praises for the way you 'beat the wheels offa Lacy!' Would LOVE to see more of you in the states...You are not just talented but entertaining as well!!!Keep it up!!!
Deb Thomas. Argoed
I think Joe is a great boxer and an inspiration to the youngsters out there. My daughter's boyfriend is friends with Joe's son and he's also learning to become a boxer. I think your father has done you proud and vice versa you deserve the best that life can offer you. Good luck in your next fight and knock the swine out not just to prove to the world you can but to prove to yourself that you can do it. GO JOE!
Donnie N Bernstein
I've seen a lot of fights in my day, including the great Muhammed Ali, but I see in Joe a talent that I've never seen before. His perserverance, personality and confidence rises way above any boxer I have seen pound for pound. His hand speed is as quick as a Mongoose and his reflexes, that of a Cat! Especially, being Southpaw, a great advantage, and his tremendous, relentless flurry of combinations were simply spectacular! Although he didn't knock out Jeff Lacey, I thought his performance was the best I have ever seen! I will be looking forward to following Joe from now on in!
Danny Reid from New York
Watch figh,s all the time, no fighter myself. I though the Lacy fight was great!!
Mani V
Joe Calzaghe is a man of the lord and fights with passion and furry.
Sian W, Arbroath, Scotland
Joe is the best fighter ever. I always enjoy watching his fights and he is by far my favourite!!
Ian Brook from Sheffield
There is no question at all - Joe is the greatest super middle weight of all time. The movement, hand speed and determination against Lacy proved that. Joe will beat kessler with ease. 39/39 - you can't argue with that.
Frank Nobert
I will put all my money on Joe C. Especially if the Welsh (Italian?) chicken-dragon slaps his brittle hands around on his own turf, he is almost certain of winning by TKO. This dude Kessler, though, would squash him, so it would be pretty naive to wait for that fight.
Danishhh Steve - Ålborg , Denmark.
Hejså Boxing fans!! Well it's on!! The biggest boxing Supermiddleweight fight since Benn v Eubank. Joe Calzaghe has been a good champ for the WBO but he'll get a shock at the pace and strengh of Mikkel "the Viking Warrior" Kessler. This will certainly be Calzaghe's last fight at the top!! Respect to Calzaghe for taking this fight against a very powerful and durable athlete. I will just say to the boxing fans out there, if you want to make some easy money then stake it on Mikkel Kessler for a knockout win!
Micky Devine, Belfast
No-one can dispute Joe's ability as the best fighter in the world. He has beaten every fighter that has been put in front of him and to suggest anyone can beat him is only speculation. Most promoters are that frightened of Joe's awesome handspeed they will not even consider putting their fighters in the ring with someone as seasoned as Joe. He will break Kessler and then hopfully a contest with Hopkins can be sorted out!
Danishhh Steve from Ålborg, Denmark.
Hejså Peep`s! Well if Mikkel Kessler get`s the chance to fight Joey Calzaghe then the welshman will be eating canvas!! I`m 100% certain that it wont go the distance and theres no way that Joey C. will hurt Mikkel Kessler "the viking warrior" Now I saw Joey`s last fight against the contender .... who is only a light middle weight! And eventhough Joey hit Manfriday at least twenty times before the Referee stopped the contest,Manfriday was`nt hurt!!! I cant see how Joey can hurt Kessler... and Kessler punches very hard according to Beyer & Andrades both state he`s got the hardest punch in the supermiddleweight division! Joe's been a good champ for the WBO but let`s be honest, it's the WBC & the WBA belts that count on the World scene. If Kessler & Calzaghe meet then I´m going for a knockout for the "Viking Warrior" inside Six rounds!!Cheers for your time.
Graceleigh Smythe, Aberbargoed
I think Joe is amazing and my dad Sean knows him.
Mike from Cardiff
I am sick and tired of all you non-Welsh pepole slagging Joe's ability. He has never dodged a fight in his life from ABAs through to now. I don't think there's a fighter out there who could beat Joe on his day. Everyone said that Lacy would destroy Joe but look what happened there - need I say more? Great ambassador for boxing all around the world - even with a broken wrist he still goes 12 rounds and wins on points. All the best Joe, whoever you fight.
Lasse from Copenhagen
Mikkel Kessler is the best super middleweight fighter in the world and hopefully the fight with Joe Calzaghe is going to prove that. Respect for Joe Calzaghe as he has been champ for 10 years but Kessler is stronger and a true viking warrior.
Mike Woodbridge, Pyle now Philippines
Everyone has the right to their own opinion and whatever opinion you have of Joe should be left until his fight takes place with Kessler. In my opinion, it will be a hard fight but, the fighting spirit, determination and guts that Joe produces will be enough to see him through as the eventual winner. He is a great ambassador for Wales and the UK, and serves as immmense encouragement and inspiration for the younger generation to follow in his legacy.
Mike Woodbridge, Pyle now Philippines
Everyone has the right to their own opinion and whatever opinion you have of Joe should be left until his fight takes place with Kessler. In my opinion, it will be a hard fight, but the fighting spirit, determination and guts that Joe produces will be enough to see him through as the eventual winner. He is a great ambassador for Wales and the UK, and serves as immmense encouragement and inspiration for the younger generation to follow in his legacy.
Guy Olivari, London
Joe is one of the greatest fighters Britain has ever produced. Every fighter has some poor bouts, but if you look at the number of fights Joe has fought at super middleweight they have nearly all been No1 mandatory challengers to his title, or former/current title holders. You cannot ask more of Joe, or put better challengers in front of him unless they actually exist. People forget Joe has been No1 for so many years, and the likes of the Lacy and Kessler come and go over night. Many younger boxing fans will have been deprived of seeing some of Joe’s best fights as they were never shown on terrestrial TV. However that has all changed, and I am sure millions will tune in to see him defeat Kessler, displaying yet another boxing master class as he did to so many other opponents.
Carl Johnson from Newbridge
I was in Joe's class in Pentwynmawr Junior School. He told me at eight years old that he would be world champion. And boy was he right. Keep going Joe.
Toya Dread!
We all know Joe has been a decent fighter. In past eras when people like Mike McCullum, Virgil Hill, Evander Holyfield etc were around, he would not have been classified as great. Good, yes. Mikkel Kessler will beat Joe and he knows it. Any fighter who constantly runs from another and call out someone else is a chicken in my books! Stop calling out the has-beens, Joe. You know I am right!
Charlotte
Joe Calzaghe is the best boxer ever apart from Muhammed Ali. His boxing skills are just the best - you can't get any better. I love you Calzaghe - keep up the good work.
Gayle, Tyne and Wear
Since being at the Lacy fight last year Joe has got me hooked. I was lucky enough to meet him (very briefly) at a sporting dinner and he is lovely. Fingers crossed he'll retire undefeated and get the recognition he deserves. (Does Joe ever read these comments I wonder?)
Beverleigh Zacher, Brighton
Joe Calzaghe is 100% THE best fighter! As for those who says he fights 'bums'....What are you taking? He is just the best there is ...SIMPLE! Can't wait for the next fight!
Chris from Blackwood
Joe holds and hits ...slaps and Lacy was tailor made for him. Fair play he may be Britain's best handled worst champion we have had but it isn't Joe's fault that he fights bums. It's his management who after all are making more money by him fighting bums and winning than losing to the likes of Roy Jones Jr even though he is over the hill.
Johnny Cocca, Rochester, New York, USA
Americans who love good boxing love Joe Calzaghe. Any time I find one of his fights on TV in the States (which is PAINFULLY sparse), I get as many people as possible to watch. He has made many fans here in the USA - even of people who did not like boxing! I wish he would fight in Madison Square Garden. Every Italian-American in New York and New Jersey would be at that fight (including me!). He needs to fight Kessler, then Hopkins, then Winky. And soon. Then everyone will see that he really is the best super middle EVER.
Enzo 'Hitman' Kaztro
Joe is da best boxer off all time... Joe challenged kessler and he accepted, but didn't do "well" in training and pulled off. JJoe is da Best...win more fights before you retire!
Jang from Stoke
Joe is a good boxer but he keeps fighting bums... I would love him to fight someone like Winky Wright who has the best defence, or Hopkins... if he beats them then no doubt he will go down the best super middleweight in history...also he has to fight in the States to prove himself.
Brian, Liverpool
Joe Calzaghe is a great fighter & I think he probably is actually the best boxer in the whole world. But I believe the best opponent out there for him is Mikkel Kessler. What better bout is there than a unification between two undefeated world champions in the same division? The winner would be undisputed champ. Other possible opponents for Joe are looking for a big pay-day but Kessler would be more than that. I think to make sure he is the best Joe has to beat Kessler & I believe he would!
Rick, Tredegar
You're a great fighter - you don't need to fight bums. Go and beat the best and you'll get the credit you deserve. You still haven't proven yourself Joe against good fighters and you ain't getting any younger.
Mark from Newport
This is to you critics! Joe ducks no-one - they offered Kessler a deal and 4 months to prepare. Guess what? He turned it down. How could any one say Eubank was past his time at 31? Joe's 35 - still no one can touch him. Why does Froch talk crap, why doesn't he go fight Kessler to prove his worth? As for Kessler, if he wants Calzaghe that bad, come here you idiot - leave your country just the ONCE! God, what idiots!
Nicola Brown, Cardiff
Having had good boxers in my family I really enjoy watching a good fight! Was a good night for Joe against Manfredo (he sounds like Joe Pesci!), but I did think it was ended a bit too soon although as Joe said he would have taken more punishment anyway! Get a little frustrated with Joe putting his hands down - what's that all about? Very good looking man tho, bet his sons are very proud! Also like to watch Amir Khan, he's a good fighter going places.
Dawood, Birmingham
Joe, you have gained my respect through your fights. Don't listen to anyone - do what you feel is right next. A record like yours takes a lot of time and hard work to gain. But don't forget it can all be over in one fight.
Paul Miles
Joe, you are the buisness in the ring. Your quickness, hand speed, all there 100 per cent. You truly are a legend. Saw the Manfredo fight - out of this world. Can't wait to see you go in there and destroy Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor, Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver and Clinton Woods.
Ginge McD, Wiltshire
Joe, yet another good performance. Shame Manfredo wasn't more of a figher. Would like you to fight Kessler. That would be a great match. Enzo doesn't get the respect that he deserves either. What a great group of fighters your gym has got.
D Millar, Glasgow
All you people who talk about Joe avoiding good fighters are tripping. Just because he's not your style of fighter doesn't mean his fights are handpicked. Just accept he's the best at what he does. As for you Americans he's coming for all your best boxers. Go Joe - keep up dishing out the beatings. Manfredo's a joke.
Gary from Shropshire
What a slapper! If I was the ref I would be taking points for illegal blows. He cant't miss using the inside of the glove, cuffs and even forearms - looks bad. And no this isn't because he has brittle hands, he has always fought this way. Lost to Robin Reid but got the decision. Never knocks out anyone who is world class - no power but I'll admit its an effective style. Bring on Carl Froch. Please don't insult the likes of Benn, Watson and Eubank by saying he's the best super middle in the last decade.
John Dicks from Penmaenmawr, North Wales
Just to let Joe know everyone from Penmaenmawr are so proud of your achievment. Well done lad, we think you're the dogs do-dahs. Plus respect to Enzo Calzaghe and the family. And last but not least Enzo Macarinelli. Go for it Team Calzaghe - we love u all xxx
Mark G from South Shields
Joe is a true professional, Peter Manfredo is going to get the same boxing lesson Lacey got. The further he climbs the ladder the more people are waiting for him to fall off. Give him some credit for an outstanding record!!
S Bailey, Pennsylvania, USA
The truth is this ... Calzaghe is just an average fighter who won't give a worthy opponent a shot at his title. Bernard is ready to destroy his ass, that is if Kessler doesnt get to him first! Bernard Hopkins vs Calzaghe in Yankee Stadium, New York ... won't happen, Calzaghe won't accept the fight.
Victor Smyth from Northern Ireland
Joe, personally you're my favourite boxer and best ever. Go for more good fights - you can do it. No doubt in my mind you'll show Manfredo how to box.
Krish
Underestimated boxer. He has a great talent, and some good experience behind him now. On the scene at the moment, he is easily number one in his division with anyone else at a DISTANT second place.
Rob, York
Joe is the best in the business - hands down! If he wants to completely dominate the middle weight then he MUST beat Danish Kessler and Aussie Mundine. Both are younger and promising but Joe should not let this opportunity go away, otherwise people will still claim that Joe hasn't fought the best fighters in his division.
Grant , Sydney, Australia
Calzaghe needs to step up and take on Mundine. After watching Mundine destroy Sam Soliman I have no doubt he would beat Calzaghe inside 8 rounds. Mundine will now go on to dominate at Middle and Super Middle weight. Kessler is the only man who could possibly beat him at the moment.
Aled Probert, Swansea
How did Joe not win sports personality of the year?
Steve Heale, ABA coach, Pontefract
We saw you fight our own hopeful in the schoolboy ABA's - what a fighter you were then. Too busy to give Howard Lamb {deceased) a chance of boxing you off. We could see you had talent then but it takes drive to achieve your record. Everyone knows a "could have been" but you have done it all. Well done from all at the SYD boxing club.
Phil, Manchester
Joe, you are probably the best to have ever come out of Britain and I admire you. Wish you were fighting someone other than Manfredo but I will support you all the same. Please give us 2 or 3 "superfights" before you retire. Sack the belts and go for the glory.
Elvis Assadi
Joe is definitely my favourite fighter and smashing Jeff Lacy, he's great and I don't think he will be beaten now. As for Peter Manfredo, he's not bad but he won't be able to handle Joe. Wish you luck Joe in the next fight.
Damien Ratcliffe from Catterick Garrison
Joe Calzaghe is my favourite all time boxer. I do boxing as well - I've just started. Good luck, Joe.
Barry Trudgian from Basingstoke
Joe is easily the best boxer that this country has produced. I have followed all his fights and the Jeff Lacy fight ranks as one of the best fights I have ever seen. To be able to throw and land over 1000 punches takes a lot of skill and stamina. If he is not the best pound for pound fighter there is then something is going wrong.
Sam Price from Newbridge
Being a local boy I am biased. But Joe is by far the best British fighter in his division, and arguably ever. Joe is a credit to Newbridge and Wales.
Nick Muszzynskyj, Leicester
His record speaks for itself - 100 percent. Sibbo was great to watch but Joe could have been the only Brit to trouble Hagler. I hope you beat the record for most title defences.
Gavin Nesbitt from Sunderland
Joe Calzaghe is undoubtedly the best boxer in his division. Joe should never have to go to the USA - they should come to the champion as should all the challengers. The Welsh dragon, he will only lose because of age and hand problems - all the best to Joe Calzaghe.
Jim Brady, Holywell
Well done Joe, the best boxing exhibition I've seen since the halycon days of the great Muhammed Ali. I wouldn't be surprised if Lacy changed his tag from left hook to slap.
Paul Odelli, Sydney, Australia
Wow! Calzaghe v Manfredo, sounds like an old time fight. As a sports buff I am amazed that a small nation like Wales can produce the best ever Super Middle, and also a World champ crusierweight in Enzo Maccarinelli. Well done, Go the Welsh.
Rich from Cardiff
Joe is the best boxer in Britain and the best Welsh boxer of all time. If he was English he would have been sports personality of the year. Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jnr dodged Doe and priced themselves out. Joe is the real deal and will destroy Jermain Taylor and then in 10 years tiime he may get some respect!!
AJ from Sheffield
Joe Calzaghe is nothing more than a pretender, skirting his way around the choicest fighters so as to drag out his championship reign. He shows little or no respect for other boxers, even when they have just given him a pummelling like Sakio Bika did a while back. Hopefully Kessler will show Joe how its done.
Diane Arkell, Forest of Dean
I think Joe is the best - he has great skill and good looks. He makes boxing worth watching. My son has started boxing at Lydney boxing club and looks up to people like Joe and hopes to go far in the sport. Good luck Joe for the future fights.
Gregory Chaney, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
I've seen Joe and the Lacey fight and was very impressed. The skills that he exhibited opened my eyes and showed me an multidimensional fighter. A smart boxer, a breath of fresh-air. I don't foresee him losing to anyone in the near future, not to Manfredo or Taylor. Joe is the truth.
Vince Dwyran
Joe you're up there with the Welsh gods that came before you! You've a little to do yet, and then we can talk about you in the same breath as Jimmy Wild, Tommy Farr, Dai Dower, and in my view the best - Howard Winstone. Come on Joe, keep it up - you will get there.
Ayub Hussain, Brierfield, nr Burnley
I have watched all your fights and can see why you have such legacy, floating around the ring relaxed, no pressure and sticking them gloves on the face whenever there's space. You're the best, keep it up, you'll take on 10 Laceys - bring them on.
Steve Handley from Cymmer
Joe has produced some entertaining fights in the past against all types of fighters but this (Jeff Lacey fight) was by far and out and out classic - a total destruction of a so-called American superman. Joe's next fight is against a real quick handed fighter Peter Manfredo who made his name in the TV series The Contender. Joe has to be very wary of this fighter. He's a real wild card and could be very dangerous! Get through this fight then clean up with either Kessler, Jermaine Taylor or event Tarver - then walk away leaving the Yanks in pain with the Welsh dragon etched in their minds.
Steve from Porthcawl
Having been 'persuaded' by Enzo to pay £20 for a CD featuring singing boxers, I can see where Joe gets his style from. If Enzo had told me to fight Tyson, I'd rather have done it than argue with him!!! Great Britain and Wales in particular should be extremely proud of the Calzaghe family and Joe in particular.
Dennis Hughes, Cardiff
great fight joe wiv jeff lacy u r one class fighter wivout a doubt. but would love to see u in action wiv dane mikel kessler he is unbeaten in 38 fights not saying ur not the man joe but this fight u need if u beat him u truley r the man wen u took on lacy he was unbeaten in 17 fights but this guy is unbeaten in 38 fights which is a lot more go on joe u know take this guy on soon.
Brycey from Lampeter
Fight Kessler and unify all 4 belts. Have 3-4 more "super-fights" and get out on TOP. Let the Yanks fail trying for ever to beat your record. Even when our rugby team was poor you were the Welsh people's shining light. Keep it up Joe.
James Roberts
Joe is one of the reasons that I am proud to be Welsh. He has got everything - looks, physique and tremendous punch speed. Keep up the good work, Joe mate - make Wales proud.
Calvin E Morgan, New Tredegar
Joe is one of the greatest Welsh boxers. We have had many, but none better. Well done champ.
Shaun, Llanelli
Keep up the good work Joe, you're doing Wales proud. Respect.
Colin, Caerphilly
All these idiots who criticise Joe should step into the ring with him and see how good he really is. He fights only what the American boxing board allow because they are afraid of his skill. If he was hailed as an English fighter he would have been knighted by now.
Mohammad, Birmingham
Joe! ur the man. u float like butterfly and sting like joe calzage!! ur a true champ. all the best.!! whatever u do. jus remem ur record speaks 4 its self!
Jordan Hart, Pembrokeshire
A fab athlete, boxer and person. Keep up the good training Joe and keep smiling.
Gemma Spragg, Taffs Well
My favourite sport is boxing and one day I would like to follow in your shoes Joe!!! I think that you're one of the best boxers ever.
Gilles Chiasson from Canada
Joe should have a match in the US, to show them he is the best boxer in the world.
Mike Murray, Aberdeen
Joe needs support, not slagging off. He is one of the best fighters since Sibson and Minter. Let's hope he can go and conquer America. Good luck, Calzaghe.
Scott Finley from West London
Since Eubank there have been no real big names, even then at the time Eubank was on his downfall. I would like to see him break America though fighting someone class like Winky Wright or Hopkins. And if he can beat them then I agree he is the real deal.
Jonathon Reid from Newport
Joe is absolutely rubbish! He slaps too much and Lacy couldn't move his head if a brick was thrown at him. Lacy has only two moves - punch and come forward. If Joe met Roy Jones Jr in his day he would get knocked out. Paul Samuels is better than him.
Andrea from Sunderland
Joe is fantastic, undoubtedly the best boxer on this planet. He puts on an outstanding performance every time and is unbelievable good looking for a someone who fights for a living. Joe you rock - bring on Kessler - Joe bottles no one!!!
Robert Edwards
You can only beat what is put in front of you. Seeing as Joe has done this let's all get behind him and wish him well. Forget the British way of cheering on our losers, for once let's cheer on our winners.
Luke Richards from Bridgend
Joe has proved him self as one fo the best boxers of all time - 19 title defences, what more needs to be said? I do think that Saturday's fight was not his best. He looked out of shape and not match ready but he still got the job done against an opponent who was a lot fitter on the night. Good luck Joe, whoever you fight next.
Adam Watts from Aberdare
I think Joe is a national treasure and deserves to be recognised as one of the greatest Welsh boxers of all time! Winky is next!
Ingrid Roberts-Davies, Nottingham
I have been watching the Sakio Bika fight and think that Joe's father should give him a box around his head and tell him to stop messing around before he loses. All this dropping down of the hand is not doing him any good - I have left the fight frustrated and angry at Joe.
Kev, Tyneside
Joe's destined to be a Legend, best of British that is!
John 'Knockout' Robinson
Personally I have found his performances to be "lack-lustre" and lacking in style. Yes he is a very good fighter and gets the job done as his records shows, however I don't think he has the style or charisma to be remembered as one of the true greats.
John
Personally I have found his performances to be "lack-lustre" and lacking in style. Yes he is a very good fighter and gets the job done as his records shows, however I don't think he has the style or charisma to be remembered as one of the true greats.
Luke Fox, Aberbargoed
No, doubt that Joe is a good fighter, impressive record but come on, greatest Welsh fighter? I think that honour belongs to the true greatest Welsh fighter and one of the all time greats Jimmy Wilde and what about another great, Jimmy Farr?
Bambam
Such comments as the above are blind. Joe has himself already said how his ambitions lie outside that scale. I'm sure he doesn't care to be remembered as the best Welsh or British boxer of all time - and why should his ambitions be so narrow? He's been world champion for nine years. He is a boxer before he's Welsh, a boxer before he's British; let's compare him to those he himself respects; those who inspire him. What's left for Jo than to be an all-time great of boxing simpliciter?
Kevin King, Abercynon
Joe's got to be one of the all time Welsh boxing legends. So give him the crack of the whip - the man deserves it. Well done mate, you've done us proud.
Paul Hazell, Cardiff
I've met Joe on more than one occasion through Italian roots and theres one thing I can say and thats he would never shirk a fight and is scared of no one. He is the best boxer in his weight in the world at this time so the world should come to him because he's not the fighter with anything to prove. If you was putting your own health on the line everytime you went to work, you would make sure that it was a perfect situation for 'you' each time. All the best for Saturday, Joe!
Patcho, Cardiff
It's nice to see everyone behind our boy, even if a lot of these backers jumped on the bandwagon after the Lacy fight. I witnessed Calzaghe on the undercard of the Steve Robinson vs Duke Mckenzie fight. I believe it was his 7th fight and he looked superb back then... keep winning, Joe.
John Smith from Wolverhampton
Having watched you fighting for most of your career I know that you can defeat Sakio Bika on Saturday. I would like to wish you continuing success. Go there and do him - I know you can. Good luck.
John from Manchester
Joe Calzaghe has had a great career, though he wouldn't have had it this good or as easy had he been around during the Tony Sibson, Errol Graham era. I would've like to have seen him up against Marvelous himself or Julian Jackson. He wouldn't have beat them guys that's for sure. But now, he should be gunning for Kessler after Biko or Bika, or will he bottle it?
Jeff Norman from Germany (born and bred in Cwmbran
Went to see Joe demolish Mario Veit in Braunschweig Germany, then seen him beat up Jeff Lacey. What more can I say - a heart of a lion and the pride of Wales. A TRUE CHAMPION.
Dilys Weaver from Crawley
Is there a DVD of the fight between Calzaghe and Lacy? If so where can I get it?
Danielle Bolton
I saw Joe first fight when I was 9 yrs old and have never missed a fight. I'm coming up to 20 this year and still think the world should stop whilst it's on!! He is a champion in his own right - I am not keen on Warren but Joe shines through that as the world class boxing champ that he is. Can't wait to go in October to see him flatten Blaiko.
Damien from Australia
Joe Calzaghe is the greatest super middleweight for the past decade at least. If any one in the weight class had the balls to fight him you would see. But the fighters go for easier bouts. If boxers want to call themselves the best, fight Joe. Not one of the top ten contenders in super middleweight would stand a chance. Joe, fight Mundine - knock him out and shut him up. All the best in the future.
Ryan from the Rhondda
As far as I'm concerned Joe is the greatest Welsh of all time. Jeff Lacey who was rated to beat him comprehensively was made to look like a complete novice and Joe is still nunber 1.
Maria Brown, Coventry aged 15
I think Joe Calzaghe is a brilliant fighter and no matter who he fights he is always a winner even if he loses. I've never missed one of his fights - he is a champion.
Steven Gwilym Roberts, Caernarfon, N Wales
Joe....What can I say?! Everything has been said about you (see above!). I can't beat that! The only thing I can say is, that you ARE the best boxer that Wales has ever seen, not only that but within your ranks as well! So, let Tarver finish off his Rocky film, then go in for the kill.
You're deffo one of a kind....
Gwyn Clement, Colwyn Bay
Pure class Joe - let them say what they want about you, keep bringing them on and you'll keep putting them away. Don't stay around too long Joe, just clean up and get out and be a legend for ever.
Stephen Wilkinson from Darlington
Joe's fight against Lacey was the best I have ever seen and was well worth staying up till the early hours for - though I thought the fight should have been stopped in the earlier rounds as I actually felt sorry for Jeff. The guy looked dead on his feet. In my opinion Joe is the best pound for pound fighter in the world and should rank as one the greats of all time. What class, what style, what a fighter.
Steve from Cardiff
Looks like we got us a new Welsh Ali.
Ste Kinsley, Llandudno
It's amazing to see how many people slated Joe for only fighting 'bums'. Anyone who has followed his career will know he never avoided anyone, but was always looking for the big fights. Other fighters have avoided him, and everyone knows how unlucky he's been with injuries. He's certainly quietened the doubters with one of the best boxing performances of all time, against Jeff Lacey, supposedly one of the best fighters around.
Lee, Cardiff
Joe is the best fighter on this earth - no doubt about it. He showed this on March the 4th fighting Jeff Lacey and he deserved that belt after waiting for so long. Gratz, best for the future.
Wesley Bishop, Alberquerque, New Mexico, USA
I too slept on Joe's talents because I'd never seen him fight but an old associate of mine told me about that cat over 3 years ago. Too bad my first time seeing him was demolishing my boy Jeff Lacey but please people don't sleep because Lacey will be back and they could possibly meet up in the light heavyweight rankings. Don't do what I did - don't sleep on Jeff. He will be back.
Rick Hilton, Nottingham
Awesome - true quality in every way. Keep it up Joe.
Jay Pugh from Newtown (Wales)
The best boxer i know!!!! And he is welsh - what a man!!! Keep it up Joe m8
Rhys.R From Cardiff
go on rocky joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul Rowles from Newbridge
Well done Joe, I must admit I placed a £20 bet on Jeff Lacey. I was quite happy with losing that. Well done Joe - I won't bet against you in the future.
Talit Karim from Ashton-under-Lyne
I thought Joe would lose to Jeff Lacey but
he was brill he gave jeff a real good pounding. A true champ. If he moves up a weight he will surely win another title.
marcus from carmarthe
Go on joe u rrrrrr a star man
colin samuel rockingham west australia
all welsh boxers are good you joe are the the best.we are all behind you in every round.
Owen Rogers, Reading ex-Risca
One word: Legend.
Anna from east middlands
I think joe was amazing in the fight with lacey! Keep it up joe
Claire from Cardiff
Brilliant fight Joe, you proved all those doubters wrong and gave Lacey a reality check!
Joanne, Aberdare
I think Joe Calzaghe is the best boxer around today and he's welsh, he gave Jeff Lacey the best boxing lesson he's ever going to have the best fight i've ever seen
Rhiannon, South Wales, UK
After seeing Joe fight a few times on the tv I did believe that he would beat Jeff Lacy but I didn't think he'd win with so much class and style as he shown. I don't know much about boxing at all and thanks to Joe I think he's given me as much as a learning lesson as you gave Lacy. So thanks to Joe for such a thrilling night, and on top of it all what an attractive man he is too!
Jonnie K from Cardiff
Well done Joe gave Lacey a boxing lesson, finally your getting the credit you deserve(long overdue)now for Tarver.
Glenn Thomas Hollybush Blackwood
Joe didnt just box him he punished him lacy will take a long time to recover from that fight! and he has found out that the slapper as he called joe slaps hard and fast, Best boxing i have seen in many a year. looking forward to next fight Best of luck joe.
carl mckean, pontygwaith, rhondda..
why do people knock joe ?? you can only fight what,s put in front of you.....
... hope now lacey is out of the way, people will get behind joe a bit more !
WELL DONE JOE..... CARL...
Tony Brookes, Ystradgynlais
Joe Calzaghe is no doubt a fine boxer. His fitness is second to none. Some clowns say he has only fought bums, but the truth is he makes fine boxers look quite ordinary, and that is no disrespect to them. I hope Joe now reaps the financial rewards he deserves. Good Luck Joe, the world is your oyster.
kay Jenkins,Blackwood.
What a class act you are joe. I have been watching boxing for 50years, but I have never experienced such a thrilling boxing match as that which took place in the early hours of last week-end. Round after round you showed the world what you`re made of. The excitement you brought to the ring and the artistry of your craft all shone through. You did Wales proud.
Bob Diaz, Chicago
I would like to know if Joe Calzaghe's fight will be retransmited any time soon in the United States, if anybody knows this plese let me know, I would love to see this fight.
bobdz100@comcast.net
Alan Taylor - Newport
My greatest praise for Joe Calzaghe - my gravest doubts about the British sporting press who have ignored a great champion for so long.
jim Nwport
Joe is a perfect boxer not like some just a punching machine he has a lot of classs.
dai padd cearphilly
brilliant fight, should be recorded and shown to youngters in the boxing gym. perhaps then we would have more champions.
Kay Jenkins, Blackwood.
What a class act you are Joe. I have been a boxing watcher for around 50 years and seen all the greats perform. However, I have never been so consistently thrilled, round for round by such perfection. You systematically showed the world how a true pro should perform. Well done and good luck for the future.
Michael Smith Liverpool
I think joe is amazing and he has proved that he is the best by beating jeff lacey. keep it going joe.
Also how fit is his bird.
kim tregunno from kent
he is a great boxer. one of the best. and is really fit.
Dara Butler from Ireland
I know little about boxing but Joe Calzaghe gave both me and Jeff Lacey a lesson in the art last night. The hands were flying so fast it was hard to believe, I think this win puts some credibiltiy back in the sport for me.
Annabella from Birmingham
What a fight last night! How hansome is Joe? I'm still smiling!
Richard, Doncaster
What a boxer! I wish i could 'slap' as hard! Didn't expect this one did you Jeff?
David Ramirez, Fontana, California
Great victory over a surprised Jeff Lacy. By the time Lacy was thinking about throwing a punch, three and four were landing on his face! The fight many in the U.S. would like to see would be a Jermaine Taylor vs. Joe Calzaghe fight. Now that would be a blockbuster!
kevin fasnacht from Indianapolis, Indiana
Joe, you rock! Your performance against jeff lacy was truly amazing! I would love if you could someday come and fight in front of all your new fans in America!
Pat Killian, Westend near Newbridge
After last night, March 4th, it makes me laugh reading some of these comments, Im happy for Joe in proving all his doudters wrong, I new he would win, he is a special talent and one that will go on to either unify the Super middle titles or move up and do it at light Heavy. Good luck Joe
ERNESTO DASCENZO...from scunthorpe u.k
after seeing joe box on the 4th march 06 theres no doubt he is a real champion he boxed jeff laceys ears off joe made lacey look like an amateur ...joes the best sorry danny maloney from pittsburgh u.s.a you under estimated joe you counted your chickens before they hatched ...ernie uk
Mr Eric T White, Wellington Somerset ,England
Mr Calzaghe,
It was not possible to watch your fight live but I saw it on telivision.
I am 60 years old and in that time I have seen many world champiomship bouts, Sir I cannot start to express my admiration for your skill, Your fight not only ranks with the best to me it was the best fight I have ever seen in my life,Your skill of ringcraft The ability you were able to move your apponent the consistent speed of your punches through the fight was just spellbinding Mr Calzaghe in my opion you are a better class of boxer that has set foot in a boxing ring for many a year it has been a pleasure to hane watched you in action.
My Regards to your father as your trainer,
Mr Eric T White

I think Joe will have his work out to beat Lacey. I think this because these WBO championship are second division compared with the titles held by WBA, WBC and others. I hope Joe's hands don't go if so he will be hard put to save himself from being seriouly hurt.

Joe is a great fighter there is no doubt. He hasnt fought the very highest class admittedly but he has had many problems with his hands and other injuries, however he has fought and easily disposed of some very accomplished fighters. I think its fair to say he has never been in any real trouble in any of his fights and this includes some he's fought effectively with one hand. Its easy to forget that he's very durable, but without doubt when it comes to pure boxing skills he is one of the best ever from the Uk.

Living in America, I do not see enough
of Joe's bouts, but I like him. However, when it comes to Jeff Lacey, I am sad to say Joe could be hurt badly. Lacey is extremely explosive and strong. I would say Joe should retire rather
than fight this monster.

met joe, nice bloke seen him fight a few times but the fights have been disapionting sorry joe
Micheal from Bear Island
It's not Joe's fault that he's that good. 39/39 speaks for itself.
Chris Boulton from Blackwood
Why do people only rate other boxers on past champ. Joe has fought 39 with 39 wins - Benn, Eubank and Collins didn't beat that. I'm not a Joe fan but you got to give credit when it's due.
Kamrul, London
It is geting real boring seeing Joe fight real bums.
Louis from essex
good boxer, enjoyed his fights.
Jason from Caerphilly
Joe is not a bad boxer, but the question remains, how would he have coped had he been around in the early nineties, with the likes of Eubank, Benn & Watson all at their prime. I think we all know the answer to that !!
Morgy, Tredegar
So he beat Eubank who was past his sell-by date. That's all he has fought are bums. As far as the WBO it's not worth a light compared with the WBA and WBC. Granted he has never had a chance of the big time which I didn't think he would have rated.
Luke Johns from Pembury
Joe Calzaghe is an inspiratrion 2 any young boxer. Good luck 2 him in the future!
GO JOE!
Damien from Leeds
Joe is not even the man at super middle. He needs to unify and stop fighting bums. Warren protects his fighters.
Danny Cray, Brynmawr
Could you teach me how to box? You rock, Joe!
Keith Bowen from Newport
Joe now must go down as the greatest Welsh boxer. After witnessing the win over Byron 'The Mouth' Mitchell, even though it only lasted two rounds, the atmosphere was incredible and was money well spent. Joe showed what a great champion he is.
